Re: Overheard Conversations
I love these... I was on a train between York and Newcastle, and I was sat behind two old ladies who spent most of the time talking about their day out. So I stuck my headphones on and carried on. When I took my headphones out to get myself ready to get off at Durham, all I heard was one say to the ...

Re: Compulsory unpaid work experience
I'm no economist quakerfan but that idea seems to make sense. Problem is, putting money into creating jobs in this day and age means giving subsidies/tax breaks to (usually) foreign companies to encourage them to move here and thereby create jobs . Eventually the subsidy runs out and the company goe...

Re: Compulsory unpaid work experience
I don't claim to know a great deal about politics, but this to me seems increasingly unfair. If there is work out there for "unpaid work experience" then there is work for someone to be paid. Its just a method for big business to profit. I doubt an independant retailer (the kind who are really strug...

Re: Would it be such a bad thing?
I've struggled with this for a while. Obviously we want to go up and stay up... but after that, which is better? Go up, ride the crest of a wave for a few games then struggle and see support wane and momentum lost if we are relegated/miles from promotion.... or Miss out, and start next season with s...

As for the North-East not benefitting, there will be a multiplier effect which comes to the North-East from this. Indirect benefit as Leeds & Manchester get stronger. More likely is that the Northeast will lose out to Leeds and Manchester when companies want to expand. However if Hitatchi got the c...

JW Blue label! Johnnie Walker had a promotional stand at JFK Duty Free last year, doing free tasters. Tried the Blue one, and thought it was pretty good, till she told me the price. Anyone on here know anything about Vodka? I don't touch the stuff and never have, but I need to get a bottle as a present for a family member, and I haven't a clue where to start. The politics of Christmas Cards We met a couple on holiday in June, and exchanged addresses as they occasionally came up this way to visit family. We haven't spoken since and then a Christmas card arrived. A nice one. Our lass nearly had a heart-attack when I opened it and said "Who are Chris and Li...

Just has nothing to do with the club today. We need to be moving forward not looking back at the time. I agree, we need to be looking forward, but the memories and past are the history of this club and part of why wei follow this team. If we'd wanted to forget the past we could have formed a pheoni...

Tip for honeymoon. Book it in January. Sounds obvious but travel agents are desperate for business now, so after Xmas they'll be even more so. Play one off against the other. From my personal experience... We spent quite a lot on a good photographer, and it was money down the drain. Binns used to have an impressive collection of Real Ale and Malt Whisky downstairs?
There was also a place called the 'Hop and Grape' that did a lot of homebrew stuff, I think they did bottled ale as well!

Re: Your worst bet ever?
A few years ago, I was sat in the pub with a mate and we decided to put a few bets on for fun. Looking at the sheet, I thought £5 on Amir Khan to beat some Colombian (Khan was undefeated at the time) AND England to beat Macedonia (Yes, I know) was a pretty good bet. England drew 0-0, Khan was knocke...

Communication seems to be the key here. Surely the Trust, Cleveland Bridge, Aspire, anyone else and the club should be running two or three buses under one banner than diluting the operation. You could still have several pickup points, the logistics wouldn't be difficult! They could share costs and ...

A "Darlo" Pub
Where did everyone drink before the game? I didn't get to a pub in town before the game, as it was a minor miracle I made it for kick off (never rely on 'helpful' family members to pick you up in time), but was wondering where people went for a beer. I had to bite the bullet and hit the March Hare a...

Hogan's isn't half as bad as it used to be, but there are better pubs, and I'm told its not as cheap as it used to be either! I will be drinking in the Green Tree or possibly The Grand (£2 a pint is VERY tempting!), and then the Aclet before the game to break the walk down. Or if the weather looks c...

Interestingly I was in the 'March Hare' opposite the ground yesterday, and heard two of the staff talking about the match. They have been told to expect a gate of around 1700, of whom I would imagine a significant number would be in the pub at some point.

Re: Home Game pre/post match Drinks
The pubs near the ground (The Tindale Crossing and March Hare) are both VERY expensive for drinking in, so while the Green Tree is some distance from the ground, it might be a good shout. A pint of Peroni in the March Hare for example is about £4. You can drink very cheaply in Bishop, and if people ...

Re: Interesting article on Rangers "newco"
I think as more clubs hit financial difficulties a restructuring of the leagues is pretty much inevitable, especially at the lower levels. Sadly I can also see the premiership/top championship clubs breaking away as well. Since the formation of the Premier League and the SKY generation, the richer c...

Re: Interesting article on Rangers "newco"
I do wonder how our FA would have handled this if it was a premiership club in the same situation. I really doubt that they'd have the balls to treat one of our big clubs this way! Chelsea in L2? I just think they'd bottle it and rewrite the rules. Just got to smile at the bloke on tv who placed a h...

I think the FA will make this mandatory for the Premiership. Whether or not they pay for it, or at least subsidise promoted clubs remains to be seen, but I expect that it will be lumbered largely on the clubs promoted from the championship to foot the bill. Then what happens in the FA Cup? Should Ar...

Was there any approach/interest from businesses actually based in Bishop Auckland? Just a thought, but if we are going to be resident in Bishop for a season, there might be a good opportunity to get some interest/investment from businesses in the town, as well as businesses in the Darlington area.
