Well, there's a surprise. Is that why the Americans are involved?

Who does he propose giving the Qatar World Cup to?

Qatar was the one that has really been disputed not Russia. Prince Ali Bin-Hussein is supported by the English FA so of course he would say that.

He is from Jordan so probably wouldn't want to upset a fellow middle eastern state too much though and take it from Qatar. Blatter's rival is not a move away from corruption in FIFA.

David Gill, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Massimo Moratti are the types of names I would prefer to see in the frame along with their counterparts across the world - but can't say I am as familiar.

Greg Dyke is now calling on Platini to lead a boycott of the World Cup in Russia.

http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/32950203

I suppose we'll have a "Freedom Cup" or some such circus to look forward to in 2018.

Again, it goes to show what a moron Greg Dyke is.

How can Platini and UEFA boycott the World Cup, bearing in mind the likes of France and Spain actually voted for Blatter? It would be seen as outrageous hypocrisy on UEFA's part.

There will be no boycott or rival competition - financially and politically it would be suicide.

The best thing for the reformists to do is to quickly identify a candidate with broad appeal who has a realistic chance of winning in 2019. And then start building the networks needed to do so.

I have no sympathy with the FA. Greg Dyke is hopeless and has no understanding of how world football works.

And David Gill may think he's making a grand gesture by not taking up the British Vice Presidency of FIFA because of Blatter's re-election.

But given we all knew Blatter would win, why did Gill accept the role in the first place?

Hopeless, the whole lot of them.

So South Africa have admitted to paying a lot of money to someone from FIFA (Jack Warner) to help secure the World Cup:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-32952078

Plus it turns out that corruption is rife amongst FIFA members and that's something which has been known for a long, long time.

Either Blatter has been complicit or it's been going on without his knowledge, so he's either corrupt or incompetent. Neither of these two possibilities suggest he is the man to lead FIFA or to stop the corruption. He needs to go whether he's involved or not.

And the illegal payments made by South Africa cast doubt on the awarding of the Qatar and Russia World Cups in 2018 and 2022 as it now becomes probable that they "made payments" to "help their bid" as well.

Something needs to be done, I just have no clue as to what.

Is anyone running a book on which of those arrested will be first to drop Blatter in the brown stuff? Would be interesting to see the betting.

Plenty have disputed awarding Russia a World Cup based on their appalling human rights record. Less of a debate than Qatar as they do actually have the infrastructure and climate to cope - but Russia is extremely backwards and that has to play a part surely in choosing who hosts such a multicultural event.

I think the decision to award the World Cup is ridiculous. But Russia isn't as backward as some people think. They're far right nutters will be a problem for visiting fans. They make the Ultra's from various European countries look like boy scouts.

I don't think there's anyone who would seriously believe Blatter's had no idea what's been going on.

He's up to his neck in it. Whether he personally profited financially is a different matter, but if senior executives were up to no good, he undoubtedly knew about it and at the very least, allowed it to continue. At it's worst, he was on the take as well.

But you're completely right, he needs to go and should have gone years back.

The best hope is he and another load of senior officials get arrested by the authorities, and the whole thing gets torn to the ground.

As I've said before, there is no hope for FIFA in any form. Corruption and dodgy dealings have become the culture, the way things are done, not just at FIFA, but at the continental bodies like CONCACAF and CONEMBOL, and the national football associations too.

That's another point that gets overlooked. It's not just a case of taking down Blatter will mean everything is fine again. The whole structure is rotten and has to be burned down (metaphorically, of course) and then rebuilt from scratch.

So Blatter's resigned. Genuinely astonished. Have the authorities finally got something on him?

It's certainly very suspicious timing isn't it? Less than a week after being re-elected as president.

It does seem a possibility, the intense heat being generated now will be a new experience for Blatter.

It seems he won't actually relinquish power for quite a while. This gives him time to have a bit of a tidy up, and keep an eye on the investigation as it unravels. After all -Sepp will know where the bodies are buried.

He is now under investigation by the US:

This must be the reason why he has resigned.

Not surprised by this at all. Dodgy man he is.

Who'll take over now then? Will Platini leave UEFA to go for it?

He was facing arrest and extradition to the U.S. if he attended the Women's World Cup which, as President of FIFA, he was committed to doing.

The General Secretary had already cancelled his planned trip...

Just saw this text from someone on the BBC website:
Dave: I would ensure every world cup is held in a country that meets an approved set of basic human rights.
This is exactly how it should be, and then countries like Qatar wouldn't get near.

Potentially fascinating if the "avalanche" hits, but he did say something similar in 2011 and nothing emerged.
