Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
Very quiet on here tonight about it!
I still think we have a chance. Obviously there were better teams to take from Pot A but Uruguay aren't what they were a couple of years ago. If we can keep Suarez quiet...then we will just have to worry about Cavani - haha.
As for Italy, I think that could be another footballing lesson from their midfield. The only thing in our favour is they aren't blessed with amazing strikers at the moment. Balotelli is Mr Inconsistent so hope he has an off day against us!

Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
A tough job made harder by the draw I'm afraid
Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
I'm no more positive or negative than I was before. Group could be harder and could be easier.
I'd rather be paired with Italy than Germany, Brazil or Argentina. Uruguay are an ageing side with a couple of forwards at the peak of their powers, but let's not forget England do have some very good players at their disposal capable of similar to what Messrs Cavani and Saurez can offer.
England always fare better in the group stages when there is genuine quality opposition. Thinking back to Argentina in 2002, and France in 2000. When we're paired with 'easy' teams we seem to find it hard to get started.
Last time we played Italy we drew with them. I don't see why we can't achieve the same result again. Costa Rica is obviously a must win for any team expecting to qualify, so the Uruguay game is the big unknown. But if Rooney performs, he's as much of a threat to them as Saurez is to us.

Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
I don't think the group matters that much, you just need to hit the ground running. I don't think we need to be scared by Italy or Uruguay. Respectful yes, scared no.
They will be just as apprehensive as we are, and maybe this time round we have a good manager - I like Roy, I think he will bring out the best in our players, and he's not Swedish or Italian.

Maybe, but Suarez and Cavani often struggle to replicate their club form at international level, so I'm more worried about Italy.cameron-darlo wrote:Quietly confident. Uruguay will in the group with us 2nd.
Costa Rica shouldn't be written off either. Either way, I reckon it'll be an exciting group.

Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
It would appear some other people are none too happy about the "Group D" draw either…

Uruguay v Costa Rica - Uruguay
England v Italy - Draw
Uruguay v England - Uruguay
Italy v Costa Rica - Italy.
Hmm...
Uruguay p2 Pts 6
Italy p2 Pts 4
England p2 pts 1
Costa Rica p2 pts 0
If Italy and Uruguay then draw, it becomes irrelevant what England do against Costa Rica.

Are you just saying that if we only get 4 points then we will go out?
In which case...I agree with you :S?

As do many players, including a number of ours!DarloOnTheUp wrote:Maybe, but Suarez and Cavani often struggle to replicate their club form at international level, so I'm more worried about Italy.cameron-darlo wrote:Quietly confident. Uruguay will in the group with us 2nd.

But far too often there's a big focus on English players not replicating club form at international level, when we're definitely not the only country that suffers from it.

Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
This is quite a good insight. The results forecasted are well possible and it's worrying to see that by the time we play our "easy" match against Costa Rica it could be all over.grytters wrote:cameron-darlo wrote:Quietly confident. Uruguay will in the group with us 2nd.

These results are quite possible, and it will be all over.

These results are quite possible. It won't be all over. We will just have to beat Costa Rica better than the others have or hope that somebody wins in the Costa Rica v Uruguay match.
My point is. The 3 matches between Uruguay, Italy & England are complete unknowns. They are 3 well matched nations. You could put together any permutations and it would be 'quite realistic' - just depends how well you sell it as being the most realistic possibility.

Re: Sooooo...The World Cup Draw?
I personally think we will do ok in the groups, Draw with Italy and Uruguay, beat Costa Rica...
Italy and Uruguay should also beat Costa Rica and providing Italy or Uruguay beat the other in that decisive final group game, we could go through runners up, if they draw it will most likely be over...The last 16 would be an easier tie, but the last 8 puts us against the Heavyweights with a possible 1/4 Final against Brazil and 1/2 against The Germans...I am getting ahead of myself now...Being the miserable old sod I am, I actually dont think we will do anything special at the World Cup, we never do

Winning it in 1966 could be seen as special.fozzovmurton wrote:I personally think we will do ok in the groups, Draw with Italy and Uruguay, beat Costa Rica...

Yes, it was...I should've said we do nothing special at it these daysAsh_Quaker wrote:Winning it in 1966 could be seen as special.fozzovmurton wrote:I personally think we will do ok in the groups, Draw with Italy and Uruguay, beat Costa Rica...
