World Cup
Well it's finally here! I can't wait.
Wrote a blog about the groups if anyone fancies a read.
http://simonhahn89.wordpress.com/2014/0 ... azil-2014/
I can't see past Brazil and Argentina to win it with my personal pick being Messi and Co.
I think England will surprise a few and reach the quarters with a ok draw in the second round.

Re: World Cup
I reckon as long as England stick with the kids we will reach the 1/4 final before going out to 1 of the big boys-this year for the 1st time I can remember we're going into a tournament without all the hype of having the best squad since 66 etc so the youngsters can go out and play without the pressure of the whole county on their backs. Most of the players will be fairly unknown throughout the world so I'm expecting them to surprise a few people....if we can somehow get past the 1/4 final then don't bet against us lifting the cup !!!!
Re: World Cup
I'm getting more optimistic than I should, and I know we're far from great, but the only teams I fear are Spain, Germany and Argentina - I'd give us a fighting chance against anyone else, even Brazil.

Re: World Cup
Brazil are probably favourites due to home advantage. If it were held on neutral ground I'd fancy Germany. Argentina are pretty tasty going forward but less than convincing at the back.

Re: World Cup
Were Brazil were nothing special there. Croatia are no slouches but Brazil looked laboured. Oscar was bright, but Hulk and Fred did nothing. Defensively they're not bad, not great, but overall they weren't very dynamic.
If England put in a performance like that (ignoring the result) knives would be out.

Re: World Cup
Nail on the head with dynamic there. Their attacking play was quite laboured and slow.
Croatia looked good down the flanks with Perisic and Olic, when they get Mandzukic back they could be quite potent.
I thought Rakitic and Modric were a little disappointing though. That said it should mean more to come from them.

Re: World Cup
To be fair, Rakitic did alright when he was allowed to get on the ball. He plays further back for Croatia then he usually does so he didn't have as much time to play his game.

Luka Modric has been playing in a defensive midfield role for Real and Rakitic has been playing advanced for Sevilla. Both have been very effective yet I figure they must have swapped round yesterday (given Rakitic was deep).
That said, I don't really know where Modric was playing. I might have just not been paying enough attention but I don't remember him doing anything of note. Reading stuff elsewhere this may have been the case as I have seen others raving about how Modric controlled the game.
Re: World Cup
Based on the possession stats, anyone suggesting Modric controlled the game knows nowt.

Haha I had seen this particular comment on facebook but to give us all some amusement...I'll go to the best source (and these are comments in regard to last nights game).Spyman wrote:Based on the possession stats, anyone suggesting Modric controlled the game knows nowt.

Re: World Cup
To be fair to the tramp-burners, Modric is a top player and doesn't waste much - but he didn't 'control the game' last night. Brazil were largely in control for long periods of the game, hence 60%+ posession and a lot more shots, corners and free-kicks awarded.

I don't disagree, but I wouldn't make those remarks based on a thread about the game last night.Spyman wrote:To be fair to the tramp-burners, Modric is a top player and doesn't waste much

Re: World Cup
I've just jizzed my pants at Spain's starting lineup, then jizzed them again when I saw their bench.

Shame they have Busquets. The only man in the world who can be blown over by an asthmatic.DarloOnTheUp wrote:I've just jizzed my pants at Spain's starting lineup, then jizzed them again when I saw their bench.
I don't understand the mentality of some players. Sergio Ramos just threw himself down before as well. If the ref sees through it then he leaves van Persie with a run at goal (or he would if he didn't him up on the way down).
When I mark someone you try your utmost to stand up. If you don't stay up then you are beaten...
Re: World Cup
Goal of the tourno right there.

I'm happy that Gabby Logan said she was damp during the half time break.

Re: World Cup
Sorry but I just can't rate England's chances though I hope to be wrong .
For best laugh of the tournament (so far) I am giving my vote to the front page cartoon on the magazine Private Eye . The plane has landed on the tarmac and the England squad are disembarking............ the pilot is saying " shall I keep the engine running ?"
Hope I don't offend any really keen supporters but time will tell who is right .

Re: World Cup
Only bet I've gone for is England to win a half at evens. They have a habit of scoring first in opening games like this.
