The Northern League in 442 Mag.........

Post by theoriginalfatcat » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:37 am

In the latest 442 mag there is a 5 page feature about The Northern League titled...."WELCOME TO THE LEAGUE NO ONE WANTS TO WIN"

It's an interesting piece telling of the history of the league and putting forward the viewpoint of nearly all the clubs - which is the - 'we don't want promotion because we like things as they are and can't afford it' viewpoint.

Bishop chairman Richard Tremewan is the odd one out here, he does want promotion and says " it's quite ridiculous. We call them the 'home for tea brigade'. They want to be back from the match at 5.30"

Tremewan also talks about the situation whereby some Northern League teams reckon they can't afford the travel costs in a higher league but then pump money into chasing Vase glory.

442 takes the angle it's all a bit insular and ridiculous too, and there is a large sized photo of a match being played out in front of a field of sheep, with the funny tagline 'Away grounds are so familiar to the league's teams, they recognise the sheep'

The Northern League always has been an old boys' club run by blokes mainly aged 65+ who like the status quo.

They're not keen on anyone breaking up their little clique with these weird ideas of promotion or modernisation.

But so long as the ageing committee men get their day out at Wembley every year or so, they can pat each other on the back and be happy.

It genuinely could be a fantastic, exemplary division. But it's run by a bunch of old fogeys who still want it to be the 1970s and aren't interested in moving with the times at all.

Hopefully Bishop will make it out of the NL sometime soon. I think South Shields in Division 2 would take promotion, if and when they win Division 1.

You're about 6 months behind with that prediction. Their chairman has said all along they will take promotion if/when they get the chance.

South Shields will be the next side promoted out of the Northern League, probably in the next 2/3 years.
