Best player against Darlo?
Have just been asked "who is the best player you have seen play against darlo, not necessarily the biggest name (though they could be) but someone who was clearly "different class"
I remember Herman Hreidarsson taking us apart in a game for Brentford, Matt Etherington before his move from Posh to Spurs and also John Stead at Huddersfield. but i must be missing some more obvious ones.
thoughts?

I have a lasting memory of Ricardo Gardner being fantastic in a league cup game at Bolton. I was quite young at the time mine so these things get distorted!

Jimmy Bullard shone in the FA Cup match against Peterborough when Newcastle (IIRC) awaited the victors.

Keeping it on the Peterborough theme, Craig Mackail-Smith stood out in this game, too.

Yes, seem to recall he tore us a new one that dayBaronsCourtQuaker wrote:Regards Giggs, was thinking first team games really.

Think it was in the FA Cup?
Benito Carbone is another name which springs to mind - I know he scored a cracker against us when he played for Villa but not sure if he was playing for Bradford on that terrible, terrible night they smashed us to bits at Valley Parade in the League Cup.
Re: Best player against Darlo?
Got to admit, a fair shout - even though he wore WHITE boots (shock horror) He ran that game and also wound up the crowd somewhat.roadrunner wrote:Alan Ball Everton league cup feethams 1960s
What about another England player, Allan Clarke for Leicester in League Cup 1968? Seem to remember he had two half chances , or Peter Shilton in goals (same game) also hence we lost 1-2.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Re: Best player against Darlo?
Surely it has to be David Beckham who I believe played for Man Utd at Darlo in the FA Youth Cup.
Re: Best player against Darlo?
Did he? I was at the match when Giggs played but it's the first I heard of Beckham playing.Darlo_Pete wrote:Surely it has to be David Beckham who I believe played for Man Utd at Darlo in the FA Youth Cup.
And even if he did play, was his performance one of the best against a Darlo side?
Re: Best player against Darlo?
Steve Bull at Molineaux in the late 80s when he was the league's leading scorer. We couldn't get near him and he scored at least 3

Re: Best player against Darlo?
I also thought (but I may well be wrong) that a young David Beckham played against Darlo when he was on loan at Preston North End.Darlo_Pete wrote:Surely it has to be David Beckham who I believe played for Man Utd at Darlo in the FA Youth Cup.
Otherwise I think that the most likely contender will come from Leicester (the two players mentioned above) Everton (also mentioned above) or the Arsenal team which played Darlo in an FA cup game at Feethams in the early / mid 1960's with players such as Joe Baker & George Eastham on their books. For some reason or other I think that Eastham might not have played in that game, but again I might well be wrong.

Re: Best player against Darlo?
Yes Ball was very good - well he'd only recently collected his world cup winner's medal - but we matched Everton in possibly our finest performance ever; they were then top of the first Division (September 1969) but they had to knock our goalkeeper out (Moor) before they could beat us 1-0.roadrunner wrote:Alan Ball Everton league cup feethams 1960s
(For younger readers, the First Division is the real name for the Premier League that some of us know it by).
Re: Best player against Darlo?
Can be no doubt it is Bobby Moore. In the memorable League Cup tie against
West Ham in 1960.
Not forgetting Nat Lofthouse in the next record breaking round.

Re: Best player against Darlo?
Fair cop, Bobby Moore was amazing and had slipped my memory. Although I do remember seeing Nat Lofthouse being part of I think 21k crowd and being small was lifted over the corrugated iron pitch fence to be sat on the grass. Can't see the FA allowing that these days - can't even stand on a grassy bank outside the pitch now!banktopp wrote:Can be no doubt it is Bobby Moore. In the memorable League Cup tie against

Wish somebody had lifted me over the fence. Spent the whole game without a view only seeing the ball when it was kicked in the air.
Regarding the cup game with Arsenal I seem to recall that George Eastam did play, not certain though and perhaps someone can recall if Darlington's goal keeper O'Neill went off injured and Ron Greener had to go in goal.

Re: Best player against Darlo?
I doubt this name will mean much to anyone, and he hardly went on to set the football world alight, but in the mid-80s Doncaster had a winger/wide midfielder called John Buckley. He took us apart on, I think, two occasions at Belle Vue. Superb player.

I recall us playing Bradford City when they had Dean Richards joined at centre half by a also very young Phil Babb...on loan at the time. Both looked so comfortable.

Seem to remember Leon Britton play against us in the FA cup for Swansea, think the final score was 3-1 to the Swans and he played really well. One player that I always remember had a good performance against us one game, but don't think he lived up to much in his whole career was Pablo Mills.

Re: Best player against Darlo?
Rodney Marsh was already a fine player when he played for QPR against us twice in 1967 in Division 3, about the same time he played a big part in Rangers winning the League Cup.
