My picks to go down, Telford, Gainsborough and North Ferriby.
No change, FCUM helped themselves today with a confidence boosting 4-4 draw at Boston. Gainsborough’s loss leaves them with 9 games left and a very inferior goal difference with Curzon Ashton and FCUM. Telford are seeing Tamworth (2 straight draws) and FCUM 1 draw inch away from them while they have not played.

I’ve expanded this write up from 4th place to the bottom of the table. The top 3 (Salford, Harrogate and Brackley) are too far ahead for us to worry about.

York;
York P-P Southport; No game today

Kidderminster;
Alfreton P-P Kidderminster; No game today

Blyth;
Blyth P-P Curzon Ashton; No game today

Spennymoor;
Salford 3-2 Spennymoor; Spennymoor now finds a pack of 5 teams that can pass them or tie with them on points after Spenny’s loss at top of the table Salford. Leading 1-2 at half time, goals on 67 & 75 mins sank Spenny. Spenny need to turn games in hand into points to hold onto their playoff hopes. Spennymoor have two midweek games, at Chorley on Tuesday, home to Leamington on Thursday.

Southport; 3 games against common bottom 11 opponents; 24/03 Alfreton (H), 31/03 Darlington (A), 07/04 Nuneaton (H)
York P-P Southport; No game today

Stockport;
Gainsborough 2-3 Stockport; Stockport jump up to 9th place with a win over lowly Gainsborough. Tied 1-1 at half time, Stockport jumped out to a 3-1 lead before Gainsborough pulled one back with fifteen minutes to go. Stockport are only two points behind Spennymoor who have four games in hand.

Darlington; (4 games); 24/03 Telford (A), 31/03 Southport (H), 14/04 FCUM (A), 21/04 Nuneaton (H)
Darlington 6-0 North Ferriby; Once the first goal was scored by David Syers, the floodgates opened on a snowy day, two from Stephen Thompson (1 pen), Rees Styche and Josh Gillies making it 5-0 at half time. A 6th goal by Gillies completed the scoring as the Quakers rise to 10th place, only two points behind Spennymoor who have 7 games in hand. Telford in 20th place are now 12 points behind the Quakers.

Bradford P.A.;
Bradford P.A. P-P Telford

Chorley;
Brackley P-P Chorley

Nuneaton; (4 games); 26/03 Curzon (A) Mon, 30/03 Alfreton (A) Fri, 07/04 Southport (A), 21/04 Darlington (A)
Leamington 1-0 Nuneaton; Nuneaton’s loss at Leamington leaves them still 4 points behind 7th place Spennymoor, as well as 10 points in front of 20th place Telford.

Leamington; (3 games); 31/03 FCUM (H), 02/04 Telford (A), 14/04 Curzon (H)
Leamington 1-0 Nuneaton; A 35th min goal secure a valuable 3 points for Leamington today, lifting them to 14th place, Leamington are now 7 points in front of 20th place Telford and 21st place Gainsborough.

Boston.
Boston 4-4 FCUM; Boston’s inability to finish games reared its ugly head again today. Leading 3-0 at half time and 4-2 after 72 mins, they conceded 4 second half goals to finish up with a 4-4 home draw. Boston have a 6 points lead over 20th place Telford, a 3 points lead over 19th place Curzon Ashton, a little too close to teams trying to avoid relegation for their liking.

Tamworth; (4 games); 24/03 Curzon (A), 30/03 North Ferriby (H) (Fri), 07/04 FCUM (H), 28/04 Gainsborough (A)
Tamworth 1-1 Harrogate; Tamworth equalised in the first half, no second half goals, another valuable point for Tamworth, they moved up one spot to 16th place over Alfreton, Tamworth are now 5 points in front of 20th place Telford and 21st place Gainsborough.

Alfreton; (5 games); 20/03 Telford (H), 24/03 Southport (A), 30/03 Nuneaton (H) Fri, 02/04 Curzon (A), 21/04 FCUM (H)
Alfreton P-P Kidderminster; no game today, a big game on Tuesday night for Alfreton, home to 20th place Telford.

FC Utd of Man; (6 games); 20/03 Gainsborough (H), 31/03 Leamington (A), 07/04 Tamworth (A), 14/04 Darlington (H), 21/04 Alfreton (A), 28/04 North Ferriby
Boston 4-4 FCUM; Down 0-3 at half time, FCUM who had not scored in the previous 5 league games looked dead and buried, a fight back began to 2-3, then 2-4 but goals in the 87th and 91st mins resulted in a valuable point for FCUM. The point lifts them to 18th place over Curzon Ashton, FCUM are now 4 points in front of 20th place Telford and 21st place Gainsborough. A big game on Tuesday night, FCUM vs Gainsborough.

Curzon Ashton; (5 games); 24/03 Tamworth (H), 26/03 Nuneaton (H) Mon, 02/04 Alfreton (H), 09/04 Gainsborough (H), 14/04 Leamington (A )
Blyth P-P Curzon Ashton; Curzon slip to 19th place with FCUM’s draw today.

Telford; (4 games); 20/03 Alfreton (A), 24/03 Darlington (H), 02/04 Leamington (H), 21/04 Gainsborough (H)
Bradford P.A. P-P Telford; no game today but a big game at 18th place Alfreton on Tuesday night.

Gainsborough; (5 games); 20/03 FCUM (A), 02/04 North Ferriby (A), 09/04 Curzon (A), 21/04 Telford (A), 28/04 Tamworth (H)
Gainsborough 2-3 Stockport; For the second time in five days Gainsborough lose a home game by a single goal, 1-2 to Brackley on Tuesday night, 2-3 to Stockport today. 1-1 at half time, Gainsborough fell 1-3 behind before a 75th min goal to make it 2-3, but they were unable to equalise. They stay in 21st place behind Telford with an inferior goal difference and see a widening points gap with Tamworth (5 pts) and FCUM (4 pts) who both drew their games today. A big game on Tuesday night, FCUM vs Gainsborough.

North Ferriby; (3 games); 30/03 Tamworth (A) (Fri), 02/04 Gainsborough (H), 28/04 FCUM (A)
Darlington 6-0 North Ferriby; Despite going unbeaten in their last two away games, (1-1-0), North Ferriby were no match for a resurgent Darlington who led 5-0 at half time, on the way to a 6-0 win. North Ferriby are almost mathematically relegated, and may appear next year as a new club.

45-46 points might be the number of points to avoid relegation based on teams below us averaging 1 point per game, FCUM & Tamworth will get to 46, Telford to 45, Gainsborough to 43, Darlington are now on 46 points in the actual league table.

Spennymoor could see the season turn ugly with 14 league games (1/3 of their season) to squeeze in, they have a couple of midweek games to play as well as Saturday for the next 4 weeks I believe.

York with games already played could find Southport and Stockport catch up to them with their games in hand for a playoff place. Is 4th place a false picture of how good York really is?

Even though we’ve played two extra games, I’m amazed we’ve overtaken Bradford who seemed to be on the edge of the playoffs in early February but are slipping towards midtable.

Chorley have some tough games remaining, they may miss out on the playoffs and been able to catch Blyth and Spennymoor, they have to play them both at home and need wins.

At least one more team needs to put on a run to get comfortably away from relegation, Southport, Darlington and Nuneaton have done so, will it be Boston, Tamworth, FCUM, Alfreton or Curzon Ashton.

Can Telford or Gainsborough find the strength to win a couple of games to narrow or overcome that three point gap and negative goal difference.

It's good to see that we now have a positive goal difference and no coincidence that our run has coincided with a defence that doesn't ship goals like it used too. Tough on Spennymoor playing Tuesday and Thursday and then not playing on Saturday due to Brackley's FA Trophy match. Very interesting reading Ginge.

Whilst still in a state of euphoria after the 6-0 demolishing of North Ferriby and our 10th place so close to a playoff spot, Ginge's figure of maximum points did bring me back to reality. Still, miracles do happen and if we could just pip York, then the schadenfreude would keep me going through the whole of the close season. Thanks Ginge.

PS Do you think Hartlepools will be playing us in the same league next season?

Yup, can we catch York, that's motivation for the last eight games :)
Who knows about Pools??
I'd like the to be in the same division, more local games, then get promoted twice as runners up below us, so we'd be back in the 92.

Ginge it would be good if you could do something predicting who would win the league and reach the play-offs and their respective positions. Obviously there is a big difference in coming second from seventh.

Apparently York City have rearranged their game with Southport on the 27th March so it would be useful if York gave them a tiring work-out then conceding a goal in the 90th to lose (although a scoreless draw would be useful too). This may give us a chance of catching York, but we shall have to win most of the rest of our games. :thumbup:

Looking at the current positions of us and York, we are 7 points behind and they have played one game less. To overtake York on equal terms we would have to win 2 and draw one game at the very least whilst York were losing four games. We would then have to match them over the remaining four games. Not impossible that York would lose half their remaining games but rather unlikely, and even if they did Darlo would have to win virtually all 7 games left. Lose even one game and York would have to lose 5, lose two and York would have to lose 6. So this is the size of the task, and I think it a good deal more likely that Darlo will lose a couple of games than York will lose 5 or 6. We might dream that this could happen but in the real world I don't think a battle to the death with our ex-manager is even remotely on the cards.

We can still put pressure on them and you never know what might happen, as the saying goes, 'football is a funny old game'.

No doubt they'll be playing for some obscure international teams like Gibraltar or the Faroe Islands.

The funny thing is it's Nuneaton with the internationals - not York!

And now Nuneaton have just lost their boss to Stevenage... the second one to quit them this season.

Talking about internationals playing for obscure countries, Darlo's (I believe) most capped international has just announced he will retire at the end of this season after 100+ games for Liechtenstein, to take up chief scout and team co-ordinator (whatever that is) role with Vaduz next season - despite coming off the bench to score the second in a 2-0 battle for third place win on Sunday.
