Mind you that MacDonald/Airey partnership was really, really special for a short spell in Division 3 before they both got injuries. Both would have scored 20+ goals had their seasons not been cut short, and that was also in what is now L1.
MacDonald hardly featured the season after and Currie was his replacement, and we'd sold Airey to Charleroi.
Quakerz in being wrong shock!!
Currie was brought in to partner Garry Mac, not replace him. Its just that Macca missed most of that season and we were relegated. The following season Dave Booth got the benefit of the Currie/MacDonald partnership and it was fooking class!! Even Kev Stonehouse weighed in with about 16 goals that season.

I didn't say that Currie was brought in to replace MacDonald, just that MacDonald was injured and Currie was his replacement, subtle difference in words and effectively true. Stonehouse scored 17 the season after and Garry MacDonald 13. Currie had 23 by February.

Saves me typing it out, got my vote, Gregan should be CB as he was stunning there but happy to have him in midfield

2 of the players getting mentions (and rightly so) got off to awful starts mind - Prudhoe seemed to flap at everything in the box, but improved vastly and Gregan at first seemed to have the big i am attititude and frequently got caught in posession trying to be to clever at the back, but as Prudhoe improved to become one of our best ever.

Worth pointing out that Gabba's debut at Sheff U in the cup was a shocker. Overweight, off the pace, past it etc.

I never thought I'd see the day Akpo Sodje was named in a 'best 11', but each to their own, I've seen worse selections.
If you're going off post-Feethams only, Clyde Wijnhard is surely up there ahead of Sodje though? I'd probably put him next behind Abbott, and maybe the HITMAN at his best just ahead of him too.

Sodje had a great ability to beat three men, get one on one with the keeper 4 yards out, and then put the ball over the bar. I've never seen anyone with the same ability to do this.

Just because he lacks basic spelling skills does not make him young.

I never said it did.
What I was getting at, was that if he thought Tommy Wright was ever 'lethal' in a Darlington shirt, he obviously hadn't seen Gabbiadini. I would assume that this is because he is too young to have supported us back then.
Anyway, I'm almost certain I'm correct, or not far off being correct. His own team post states he's only been following us since 07/08, so it is safe to say this is because of age.

Yes, to say that Wright would feature in the best XI is ludicrous. Although I had a soft spot for him because of his aggression, physicality etc. he wouldn't feature in mine and I have only been a season ticket holder from about 2005.

This thread has really hit home with me just what a disasterous last 3 years we have had (Barring wembley!) and how far we have sank. Some players of real class have pulled on our shirt over the years. Anyway here is my attempt from 1992ish onwards:
Gk - Andy Collett
DF - Craig Liddle
DF - Sean Gregan
DF - Jason De Vos
LM - Franz Burgemier
RM - Neil Heaney
CM - Gary Bannister
CM - Craig Hignett
ST - Marco Gabbiadini
ST - Pawel Abbott
ST - Robbie Blake
A very attacking 3-4-3 formation!!

2-3-5
Barber
Pallister Smith
Speedie Gregan Ward
Roberts Blake Airey Currie Walsh
Its been forgotten that Pallister played I think 7 games for us in the mid 80s during which time I dont think we conceded more than a couple of goals. And we tried to sign him...not for much money either.
I think whilst this formation would ship goals, the front 5 might just be a bit hard to handle.....
