Northern league player to last sign for us

Post by Comfortably_numb » Sun Sep 08, 2013 9:59 pm

Was Danny mellanby the last northern league player to sign for darlo whilst in league 2?

Think I could be totally wrong and hence happy to stand corrected.

Just trying to (again) gauge the standard of players in our current league vs conference nth / prem etc

Didn't Nathan Mulligan sign from Norton and Stockton during that last season in League 2?

My interpretation.

Stand out players at this level (Robinson/Moore & Thompson are the ones in that bracket for me) on a good day by their standards would not look out of sorts in the Football League, they would be about average standard in League Two on those days.

Thompson I think is better than a fair few players we had in league two in recent seasons. I know the standard of opposition is not comparable but would you swap him for say Carlos Logan, Simon Johnson, Craig Nelthorpe, Kevin Gall, Mark Convery, Jeff Smith. I wouldn't.

I don't know, Carlos Logan managed to keep playing in the BSN until very recently and I think you'd be a lot more impressed with him at this level. Especially if he was playing at the same age he was when he was with us.

Thompson is very good at this level but until I see it I don't think he could hold his own consistently at League Two level.

I know he wasn't the last one, but didn't super Glen Robson come from the NL?

Yeah he did, so did the mighty Phil Linacre, from Newcastle Blue Star back in 91

As did Gary Pearson.

I think Leandro Scartascini came from the Argentinian equivalent of the Northern League as well.
