Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
It looks pretty good, with strength in depth across all of the positions. I'm not quite sure how Gray is going to keep them all happy and give them first team game time.

Missed off Wearmouth. Although injured at present do we class him as midfield or striker. Looks a good strong squad

The amount of people missing out the second "i" in Josh Gillies is going to irrationally annoy me this season.

It's hard to rotate midfield players, if they are on top form and we don't have too many midweek fixtures.theoriginalfatcat wrote:A lot of midfielders !

Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
When everyone is fit we could almost put out 2 different very competitive X1's
Jameson,Marrs,Galbraith,Brown,Burgess,Gillies,Thompson,Turnbull,Portas,Gaskell,Cartman
or
Bell,Mitchell,Watson,Hunter,Lovegreen,Wearmouth,Nightingale,Scott,Nowakowski,Purewal,Hardy
I think that second X1 wouldnt fare too badly in the Conf North! Would expect our opening line up against Altrincham to be closer to that first X1 with maybe Nightingale featuring. Strong options everywhere though.

Could be good for the FA cup to go far in, use a strong squad in the cup games this year while also having a strong squad in the league.

Think to be able to give players game time its important to have a good run in both cups....for a change!Darlo1235 wrote:Could be good for the FA cup to go far in, use a strong squad in the cup games this year while also having a strong squad in the league.
Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
We were very lucky that not many serious injuries hit us last season and that despite an incredible amount of matches during the run-in due to having to fit in postponed games, last season's squad was stretched to the limit. MG seems to have done a great job in replacing those stalwarts who aren't with us this season coming and as others have pointed out, will be difficult to keep everyone happy by giving them playing time on the pitch. Last season, everyone on the squad was there for the good of the team, no prima donnas and just hope these lads can do the same again. Mark Beck seems to be the last piece of the jigsaw, so hope the wide players can put some crosses in for him or that he can hold the ball to release other forwards to create goals and chances. Can't wait for the new season, come on the Town!

Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
I would think so, I'd guess that despite being a couple less games in the league it's going to be a more physically demanding one. Hopefully MG will field strong teams for any cup games as well.theoriginalfatcat wrote:A lot of midfielders !

No Weldon and isn't Saunders a striker? (ex RA/Bishop)

Should be a big contribution to attacks from the midfielders listed.
More permutations available to MG

Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
Bell hasn't featured at all this pre-season, as opposed to McLaren who has. So it does make me wonder as to whether Bell has just been brought in as a Goalkeeping Coach.
Lovegreen has gone out on loan to Bishop Auckland.
Saunders is only young, and I don't really expect him to feature much this season as we have Beck, Cartman, Purewal, Gaskell & Hardy.
Weldon won't be re-signing this season given comments made earlier in the summer.
That leaves us with a squad of around 21, with 1 long-term injury in Arran Wearmouth. It will be interesting to see how Gray is going to fit everyone in but, that said, at least we won't have to field defenders or midfielders up front at the beginning of this season! I can't see any weak-links in the squad which I believe we had at the beginning of last season such as Gibbons, Bell & Brobbel who all swiftly departed.

Re: Darlington FC Current Squad
We seem to have the right number of bodies in each area and good fitness has prevented a spate of injuries in recent times.
The players just have to "click" now. I'll be attending the first three league games, so hopefully i'll see some great joined up team play. If not, fluency can develop over a month or so.
MG seems to be gunning for a third title and unlike some managers can fall back on a well settled squad of successful team-players from last season.
Darlo worth a punt before the odds shorten too much?

Not helped when even the thread devoted to the player in question gets his name wrong https://www.darlofc.co.uk/forum/viewtop ... =2&t=31205Darlogramps wrote:The amount of people missing out the second "i" in Josh Gillies is going to irrationally annoy me this season.
