The Bottom Ten, Tuesday Mar 26th 2024

Post by Ginge01 » Wed Mar 27, 2024 4:24 am

Southport had the big result tonight, winning 4-1 at Bishop’s Stortford to now be 8 points clear of fourth bottom Rushall. A disappointing night for Peterborough who failed to win any home points with a loss to Warrington. Banbury also lost and are mired in a nine game losing streak.
On to Good Friday football.

The biggest games that can influence who goes down.
I’ve included Banbury, Gloucester or Bishop’s Stortford games as opposing teams should take advantage of them and get three points in those games.
06/04 is going to be a huge weekend with four big games involving eight Bottom Ten teams, 13/04 has three big games involving six Bottom Ten teams.
On Friday, Darlington need to play well and get a result against Chorley, hoping Southport can beat Farsley and Alfreton can beat Rushall.

Reading all the permutations has butterflies in my stomach, dread and fear of ifs and buts; and I just know it will go to last game of the season. Bloody hell

Yes, but at least it feels like it is still in our own hands. Got to keep winning & clean sheets.

2 wins and we are safe!

I expect us to be mathematically safe by 5pm on 13th April

One thing that looks possible this season is that the magic 50 points target may not guarantee safety. I think we need a minimum of 2 more wins or 52 points to have a good chance of staying up. Another complication for us is that the 2 teams just above us, Farsley and Peterborough Sports, still have to play each other twice. Probably best for us if PS do the double and keep Farsley in trouble, especially with them having to come to BM.

Feels like a straight shoot out to the end of the season between us, Rushall and Farsley.

Farsley: played 40, gd -17, pts 46
Fixtures remaining: Southport 15th (h), Spennymoor 8th (a), Peterborough Sports 18th (h), Peterborough Sports 18th (a), Darlington 20th (a), Buxton 14th (h)
L10games PPG: 0.5 (projected 49pts)
My projected finishing form: LLWDLL (projected 50pts)
Average position of remaining opponents: 15.5

Darlington played 41, gd -23, pts 46
Fixtures remaining: Chorley 4th (h), Warrington 12th (a), Southport 15th (h), Farsley 19th (h), Chester 10th (a)
L10games PPG: 2.1 (projected 56pts)
My predicted finishing form: LWDWD (projected 54pts)
Average position of remaining opponents: 12.0

Rushall: played 40, gd -14, pts 44
Fixtures remaining: Alfreton 7th (a), Boston 5th (h), Blyth 16th (a), Bishops Stortford 24th (h), Southport 15th (h), Warrington 12th (a)
L10games PPG: 1.0 (projected 50pts)
My predicted finishing form: LLDWLW (projected 51pts)
Average position of remaining opponents: 13.2

Farsley are in by far the worst form, but have the easiest run in with only Spennymoor in the top half to play. There have been signs of desperation from them. A director or football move from upstairs onto the coaching team to support the management team, and a 38yo coach registered to play to stop them shipping goals. They dont score many either which might be their undoing.

For us, two wins before the end of the season might be enough. I'd be certain three wins will see us safe. Especially if one of those can come against Farsley.

Don't think Bishop's Stortford will be springing any surprises, including when they play Rushall. Steve Smith, their owner/manager, said: "April 20 can't come soon enough for me." He's still raging about being placed in the North rather than the South: "I lost half my squad. Financially it's crippled us. It's scandalous, disgusting."

Just 5 wins and 2 of the feckers against us..... don't even go there....

In the off field relegation stakes:

Saw Warrington have been given an extension to 30th April to have their ground upgrades completed and inspected to meet Cat B ground grading. Report said the ground had been initially inspected this week which I presume means inspected with the completed upgrades in mind and an expectation that these improvements will meet the Cat B criteria.

Nothing on Rushall yet. Presumably they will be applying for the same extension as otherwise their ground improvements would need to be completed by Friday (29th).

Southport could be safe by the time we play them, hopefully they will have the cigars out!

One thing that worries me a bit is that our 2 most winnable games are Southport and Farsley at home, both teams we never seen to beat at BM.
