Nice bit of trivia

Post by Spyman » Wed Feb 28, 2024 4:16 pm

Yesterday marked the 25th aniversary of the last all-English Premier League side.

"Not Darlo related, do-one" you scream?

That team contained two players with Darlo connections. Who can guess who they are?

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Correct (although both already guessed above)!

Gareth Southgate also a member of the same team.

I've got no idea but even prior to the influx of players from abroad in the 90s I'd imagine most teams had an Irish, Scottish or Welsh player in their ranks going back some way.

Indeed it was. In 1975.

The West Ham cup win in 1975 was the last all-English side to win a trophy in first-class football.

GK 1 Mervyn Day
DF 2 John McDowell
DF 3 Lampard Sr.
MF 4 Billy Bonds (c)
DF 5 Tommy Taylor
DF 6 Kevin Lock
FW 7 Billy Jennings
MF 8 Graham Paddon
FW 9 Alan Taylor
MF 10 Trevor Brooking
MF 11 Pat Holland
Substitute:
FW 12 Bobby Gould
Manager:
John Lyall.
Everyone an Englishman, and yes of course there is a Darlo connection.

Great trivia. I forgot anyone had fielded a all english squad at all in the premier league era. Bound to be a game soon where no english player is in the starting 11. On another note who was the last english manager to win a major trophy, im taking a punt on harry redknapp 16 year ago
I may not live in the north east anymore but i still support the north east teams

I'm reading a great book "Europe United" where the author tried to visit games in all 55 UEFA countries in one season. A Portuguese team in the Europa league had no European players!

That's happened multiple times. The first were Chelsea at some point in the late 90s I think.

Probably less common now than it was 15-20 years ago I'd imagine as we do produce more quality English players than we used to.

Probably very recently given that most players we recruit are north-east based.

Other than the mysterious greek winger, Asante and Main, do we have anyone non-English in the squad? If not then whatever the last game Main didn't play in would be the last time, I think?

Edit: Cardo Siddick, but still only joined during this season so I'm sure the answer will be this season!

I'll have a go:
The 8-0 shafting by Chorley 14/11/23:
Taylor, Rowe, Hedley, Rivers, Burton, Lawlor, Ngandu, Hatfield, Lindley, Nelson, Salkeld.

Moke did come on who is Portuguese according to Wikipedia. Also, it says Barrow is Welsh.
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

I've just watched a bit of Airdreonians beating TNS in the Scottish Challenge Cup!! Then I ended up looking at National League South and Taunton and Truro have so many games to play as they've been sharing Taunton's pitch. I can't believe Truro are playing at Gloucester now. That's a 400 mile round trip for home games! 176 fans v Chelmsford.

Suspect that the home grown rule helps with it. Premier League clubs can only have 17 non-homegrown players, and have matchday squads of 20.

Homegrown doesn't make them English, but the majority of plays registered at English clubs at under 18s are going to be English.

As I have mentioned before, when working in Truro I met a guy in his late 70's and a group of Truro fans go to every game in a minibus home and away, now that is dedication. To finish off their season they are having to play at least 3 games every week!! Hopefully they're new ground will be finished sometime soon and they finish up remaining in National League South.
