Quakers to play friendly against Boro Under 23s on Wednesday

Darlington are pleased to announce that Quaker legend Craig Liddle, who now coaches Middlesbrough Under 23s, has agreed to bring his exciting young side to Blackwell Meadows this Wednesday night for a friendly.

Boro are currently top of the Premier Reserve League 2 with an excellent record this season, having won eight of their twelve league games, while some of the players have been involved in the first team. Lewis Wing, who had a brief spell at Darlington four seasons ago, is a regular in the Under 23s.

Darlington manager Tommy Wright, who intends to field a full strength team in the game, said: “We need some match practice because we haven’t played for nearly a month and the lads are chomping at the bit. We’re very grateful to Boro for sending a team.”

“Lidds” needs no introduction to Darlo fans. After a long and distinguished playing career as a player at the club, he became manager at the start of the club’s third administration in December 2011, and despite all the problems associated with the administration and the exit of several players, conducted himself impeccably and managed to field a team every week for the rest of that very difficult season.

“I have fond memories of Darlington, and it will be great to see some of the old faces again. It would be great for plenty of Boro and Darlington fans to come along and watch what should be a very good game,” he said.

Admission to the game will be £5 for adults and concessions, with children under 11 free. Kick off is 7.30pm.

Details of hospitality will be announced soon.

Darlington FC would like to thank Darlington Rugby Club for their help and co-operation in helping to organise the game at short notice.

Great move by the club to arrange a game against some very good opposition. I'm sure Lids will get a great reception and hopefully a good few fans will turn up to watch.

I wonder who is responsible for arranging this fixture so that praise can certainly be given. Wonder who's idea it was. If this is Tommy delivering on his promise during the Netcafe that he wanted to make more of his North East connections then I am highly impressed.
Likewise the simple but ingenious idea of pie and peas hospitality for a tenner. If this is a sign of the future then we're gonna be OK.

Good idea - a bit of match practice to shake off some rustiness before a huge match at the weekend, and hopefully a decent number of people turn up so that we make a bit of cash too. Just hope no-one gets injured!

Seems like a genuinely positive move. Hopefully a good run out for our lads. Work on some match situations and formations. Get some people through the gate hopefully get in a few Boro fans too for some much needed cash flow. Finally build connections with one of the most successful youth systems in the north east and hopefully make ourselves a shop window for some of their players.

In other news. I seen Spennymoor and Gainsborough have agreed to play their FA Trophy match to conclusion on Tuesday night. Let's hope it's a competitive game for them on Tuesday and extra time and pens.

Was a bit surprising to see players like Clayton, Tavernier, Gestede and Friend involved. It was a squad which would have demolished many a League side never mind National North. At least we got a second half draw!

I'm sure if Boro had announced that those players would be playing, we'd have got a good few more there, including some from Boro. Due to a late change in my work schedule, I was able to attend. Some good performances especially in the second half. At least it provided a competitive game for the squad, which can only help on Saturday. No sign of Lidds last night, unless he was up on the balcony?

I know we were playing a good Boro side with a number of first team players, but I have doubts about playing 3 at the back, Thomo worked his socks off but you see the huge gaps whenever he came forward.

Just watch the highlights and I know it doesn't help to have a shakey and new defence infront of you, but don't reckon much to the keeper that played for us last night. Let's the ball fly directly over his head for the first, let's it bobble through him for the second and not down fast enough for the 4th.

Agree with what others have said, we didn't look solid with 3 at the back. No one seemed to know who their man was when they came forward and got into the box. Not saying it can't work but certainly something that needs far more practise and could be implemented over next summer.

Based on that I'd keep it simple for Gainsborough on Saturday. Play 4-2-3-1:

---------------------- Talbot -------------------------

Trotman, Heaton, Collins, Galbraith

-------------- Turnbull, Portas ------------------

Thompson ----- Syers -------------- Mills

---------------------- Styche ------------------------

Subs: Wilczynski, Brown, Wheatley, Gillies, Caton.

We know there are goals in that front 4 and we also have Gillies to introduce of the bench who offers a goal threat. Along with Wheatley to keep the energy high in midfield.

Yep the keeper certainly should have tipped the first one over, and a better keeper might have done better on the 2nd.

Was going to ask - who was that in goal!? To be fair for the defending wasn't great for the last couple of goals either. Way too much space for Boro.

Apparently Talbot had a slight injury, so Sunderland loaned us their 4th choice keeper and he wasn't very impressive.

Mark Prudhoe who is the Sunderland Goalkeeping Coach was there to critique Talbot: From what I heard him say, he was not impressed with the performance.

I think Wright & White were taking a look at a few, hence those on trial. Perhaps more with a few to how a couple of the more seasoned fit in long term. I can certainly see the curtain coming down on 2 or 3.

So Prudhoe went to critique Talbot yet couldn't tell the difference between Talbot and Woad?
