Shame to lose a high profile sponsor (but about time that line was back in public ownership, it should never have been sold to Virgin in the first place).

Here's hoping we can attract someone who will throw many, many pennies our way

In fairness to Pete, he could have meant the current deal runs out at the end of this season? I was pleased we got 2 years out of them to be honest

I know it wouldn't be good for the club, but how good would a shirt without a sponsor look?

Could even do the retro 3 thin hoops, just the badge and the manufacturer. Love a good retro looking shirt, me.

While I agree it would look good. I don't think it would be a commercially feasible option. Shirt sponsors are a good opportunity for the club to generate revenue for not doing very much. We should in my opinion be trying to not only maintain a good shirt sponsor but also build on this. Lots of teams have sponsors on the back of shirts now above the player numbers or even on the shorts. I know it wouldn't be massive amounts of money but in our situation every little bit of revenue matters.

I also thought about the SG sponsoring the club shirts with money raise through membership. But the problem is again if that circa 20k would have come into the club anyway on top of of shirt sponsorship money then the SG sponsoring shirts actually represents a net loss where some other person might choose no to put the money in.

Better off finding an independent shirt sponsor in my opinion and continue to maintain Uncovered and SG's support for the club in its current guise, on top of sponsorship revenue.

I wonder what the appetite would be for a raffle similar to the FA Trophy year where the morrit sponsored us?

And on a completely separate note, have we been asked to choose the kit designs for next season yet? I quite enjoyed that part of to hehe process felt like asked very easy thing to give back to the fans.

If they stay around on the franchise as they may well do, I think the sponsorship could well continue.

Not possible - would breach adidas registered logo.

Anyway, i'm aware we need the money, it's just nice to think of. A two fingers up to commercialisation of football, if you will.

I noticed Boro have Teesside Airport on the back of their shirts. Wonder if they'd fancy doing it with ours. After all, we're closer! (I think they used to have Flamingo Land as sponsors on the back also??)

Perhaps we should follow the example of Rugby League, were they must have at least 6 different sponsors on their shirts. It can look good if properly planned.

Good call but I think the league dictates where sponsorship can be displayed on shirts doesn’t it ?

All of the above a good calls, the problem we have is we can’t attract basic sponsorship from these places, match sponsorship, ground advertising etc so why do we think can attract them as a shirt sponsor ?

Virgin have officially pulled out of sponsoring the club next season, club now looking for a new sponsor.

Virgin Trains end sponsorship of Darlington FC



After working together for two successful years, Virgin Trains have decided not to extend their current main sponsorship of Darlington Football Club beyond the 2017/18 season.

Virgin have been generous sponsors of the club in the last two seasons, which have proved to be mutually beneficial for both parties.

Darlington FC director John Tempest said; “Virgin have been superb sponsors over the last two years, not only offering our fans 25% off travel on the East Coast line but supporting friendlies held at the Northern Echo Arena where they offered additional travel discounts. Also as our main shirt sponsor, DFC sold over 1400 shirts in the first season with the distinctive Virgin brand. We would like to wish them well in the future.”

Virgin Trains East Coast spokesman Phillip Peacock added; “The partnership has helped facilitate travel for many Darlington FC fans, as well as demonstrating our support of the local communities that we serve. We will obviously be keeping a close eye on the team’s performances and wish them all the best for the coming seasons!”

The current saving of 25% on travel will be available on bookings made on the travel club page, with the promotion being available until May 2018.

The club has now launched a search for a new sponsor. Any enquiries should be directed to john.tempest@darlingtonfc.org

Have Virgin ended sponsorship of the other team(s) as well?

Seeing as the guy from Virgin who set the deal up was a mate of Grays it was nailed on that the deal would end even if they hadn’t lost the franchise for the East coast line.
Prestigious brand though and hopefully JT and DJ can uncover another good one.

If I remember it was a John Tempest who secured the Virgin deal it didnt have anything to do with Gray let’s hope we can can get a decent brand and money into the club.

He was a mate of Grays from his time at Oxford.

Hopefully the recent (partial) debt clearance by the 500 club extensions will help give the directors the time to make some calls to some bigish businesses with some cash to spare!

There is no bail-out, pure spin from the Department for Transport and HMG - not to mention dozy Shadow Transport Ministers, Lord Adonis et nauseum.

Most blame lies with the DfT for not making the upgrades promised that would enable VTEC to improve services and make more money to pay to the DfT.

I'm no fan of Branson - who has only a 10% stake anyway - but I have some sympathy.
