I discovered quite by chance the other day that Giuseppe Wilson (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giuseppe_Wilson), who played in all three of Italy's 1974 World Cup matches was born Joseph Wilson in Arnold Road. Got me wondering if any other Darlo-born players have appeared in a WC finals tournament but this 2014 Echo article about Wilson suggests not (http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/histor ... lian_hero/). So, next best thing, have any Darlo-born players played any international football?
I have to confess I'd never heard of Wilson but he had an interesting career. He played 300 games for Lazio and captained them to the league title but only won 4 Italy caps. He also played in the same NY Cosmos team as Carlos Alberto, Beckenbauer, Dennis Tueart, and Giorgio Chinaglia (a former team-mate at Lazio).
Darlington-born players winning international caps
Re: Darlington-born players winning international caps
Found one. Charlie Roberts, born in Rise Carr, capped three times for England, albeit in 1905. He went on to form the predecessor to the PFA apparently. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charlie_Roberts
Re: Darlington-born players winning international caps
James Morrison, 46 caps for Scotland
(Not World Cup though, obviously)
