If you look at transfer fees in the SPL outside of Celtic and Rangers they are not particularly large.

If you look on transfermarkt. St Mirren haven’t paid a transfer fee for a players since they paid £42,000 for Dougie Imrie in 2011/2012.

Look at Hearts / Hibs / Kilmarnock / Inverness etc. basically free transfers and very few signings that cost more than £100k.

So if they paid £75k, they must really want him.

Indeed to be honest it’s a good move for us as well as him beyond the transfer fee. He should actually play as SPL is pretty much L2/NL level and then Celtic have a top end Championship side. That means Heaton can play, and if he does well it will spark interest of L1 / Championship sides.

There is definitely an infinitely higher chance of getting appearance and sell on add ons from this that if he’d gone to Boro / Everton being a relatively old player in their u23s side and ultimately for the fee paid quite dispensable if he doesn’t hit the ground running.

Decent figure and a decent move for Heaton. One he deserves and if he does well will quickly attract interest from the Old Firm or Championship sides - I hope we've got plenty of clauses in there!

What with this, the other fees we've received, the Non League Challenge money and the Legends friendly to come, alongside apparently more sensible budget setting, we surely are in the healthiest financial position we have been in for a long long time.

I bloody hate it that we're waiting for an announcement of a new centre back and that Joe Tait thread keeps getting bumped to the top of the page. No, just no...!

replace L2 / NL with the english championship / top of league 1 and your closer.

Agreed, Scottish football isnt as bad as people make out.

Regarding the standard of football that Josh Heaton is going to be playing in.

You have to be realistic about Scottish football, the population of Scotland is 5.2 million, it's a small country. The fact that a league in a small country of five million people has Celtic getting 60,000, Rangers 50,000 and Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs getting 10-15,000 (more in the big games) is remarkable really.

When you compare this to other countries in Europe with comparable populations, Finland, Slovakia and Ireland, they don't have any clubs anywhere near the size of the clubs mentioned above. Comparing English football to Scottish Football like a lot of people do is not comparable.

Josh Heaton going from National League North to playing against big clubs in a top flight league is a fantastic move for him, and gives him a chance to progress and hopefully make us more money down the line. And fair play to him for going up there as he has allegedly been offered first team football, he could have stayed down here playing in an under 23 team on good money but he clearly wants to go and test himself.

absolutely. he'll be going up against the likes of Kyle Lafferty, Leigh Griffiths, Scott Sinclair, not to mention outright thugs up here like Scott Brown.

Huge learning curve, but fair play to the lad for setting himself the personal challenge. Hope it works out for him as it gives DFC another selling point when signing players.

As is called our the population of Scotland is smaller than London. I would assume the per population attendance at football is potentially higher in London though.

By the way not saying that Celtic, Aberdeen and Rangers don’t have good players coz they do.

True lo but I expect Motherwell to finish 7-9th in the SPL - also 3 players doesn’t make up the whole team.

Think the main difference between Scottish and English football is that there’s a large gulf between the top 6 sides and the rest. In England it’s not so much a gulf as more a steadier step down. There’s no equivalent clubs like Wolves, Sunderland, Charlton, Leeds kicking around the 2nd / 3rd tier of Scottish football.

which either means transfermarket is incorrect, (see 06/07 season £428K paid for Stephen O'Donnell) or their press release yesterday was inaccurate......or we did receive more than 428K for Heaton!

The Croatian national league isn’t up to much though is it? Croatia do amazingly well to consistently produce good teams to be honest.

That's the case with many of the smaller nations of Europe like Sweden and Iceland. The majority of these countries players tend to play in teams from other larger countries.

See St Mirren played Sunderland and were beaten 6 - 0, and did not bring Heaton off the subs bench?

Has he made a competitive appearance yet? I know the transfer fee will have done us good and he's only 21/22 and there may be a reluctance to throw him into things but must be frustrating bench warming each week? Not our problem now and maybe won't totally be missed but I hope his career doesn't stagnate north of the border.

Heaton has been on the bench every game, will have to bide his time until he gets an opportunity.

Not so. Josh has started two games v Queens Park and Spartans. Both were in the Betfred Cup.

Has he come off the bench for either Scottish Premiership game yet? Hope he shows them how good he is and other larger clubs take an interest and put in a massive bid for him. Does anybody know what sort of sell on clause was put into his contract?

As a CB it’s not one of those positions he will get a run out to give him a feel. It will be forced by injury or if they are winning by a solitary goal and want to defend it deep.

It seems in their win against Dundee it was a defensive midfielder which was brought on and they lost the other game.

He’ll get a chance once he proves himself better than the rest in training or if an injury forces a change...it would be unexpected for him to waltz into the starting line up given where he has come from.

St. Mirren sack their manager, not sure what impact this will have on Josh's career with them.
