Darlington V Altrincham Match thread

Post by poppyfield » Fri Aug 24, 2018 6:35 pm

It will be interesting to see the line up that TW decides on for Saturdays game.
Probably a reshuffle in the back 4 and definitely one in the midfield.
I think we should still go for 4 4 2, Hughes needs a run of games, this is his chance.

Maddison,
Trotman Burn Galbraith O'Hanlon,
Thompson Hughes Elliot Henshall,
Styche Ainge.

Always had a soft spot for Altrincham growing up in the 80's hearing about their giant killing exploits. It got to the stage when it was a shock when a league side beat them! One result sticks in my mind - Liverpool 4 Altrincham 1 in the 3rd round of the cup.

Believe it or not though, this will be the first time I've seen them play.

Hoping for a repeat of the Blyth performance but 3 points this time!

I know its a bit early in the season but the stats for both sides are almost identical.

Hard to disagree with that.

Was it Altrincham that we played in the Cup one year and it was a featured game on Match of the Day? Dan Chillingworth?

Twas indeed. Think we won 2-1 that day, Chillingworth and Wainwright if my memory serves me correctly.

Superb. We were all wearing Santa hats (far too prematurely) which got us some attention of the great Barry Davies I think.

Only thing I would change from this is Nicholson or Syers for Hughes imo as those two will have a bit more mobility than Hughes.

Hughes doesn't need mobility, he has a killer pass.

Effectively, the pitch moves him to where he wants to be.

Give him a few more games to shake the rust off, you will see. I know quality when I see it.

So Quakerz, do you think he's the nearest we'll have to a Turnbull replacement?

When we play York Hughes could 'keep an eye' on Parkin.

Parkin won't be used to competing against someone bigger than himself.

I’m inclined to agree from the little we’ve seen so far.

He needs a run of games before the bed wetters can soil their sheets.

Team announced.

----------------------------- Maddison -------------------------

Trotman -------- Burn ---- Galbraith ------ O'hanlon

Thompson ---- Hughes ---- Elliott ---- Nicholson

----------------------- Styche ----- Ainge --------------------

Subs: Collins, Syers, Glover, Saunders, Dunn.

Hoping that is a 442 rather than a 433.

This is so unacceptably appalling youd almost think all is not well behind the scenes. With this level of performance we'd struggle in northern league 2.

Got to go down as one of the most abject performances we've ever put in. It is a big worry that were capable of being that bad.
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

Why did Collins come on for Galbraith and was then subbed at half time ?

We looked horrendously badly organised for most of the Kidderminster game. I take it today was the same?

Why did Collins go off?

Galbraith was injured, Collins came on , no idea why he was subbed, something isn’t right

Awful, horrible, spineless performance.Big worry for me is 3 or 4 of the new signings simply not good enough for this level, we cannot defend, set up to be far too attacking, even the 2 full backs are always pushing up and leave us wide open for the counter attack.Simply not good enough sorry to say Tommy,15 goals conceded is a disgrace.Even more worrying is if we have unsettled players behind the scenes, Syers looked fed up in the dugout at HT and just what is going on with Collins god only knows.Really cannot see us winning many games the way TW has us set up ....worrying tbh.

It’s difficult to know where to start, it was so bad. We seemed clueless, disinterested , not trying to win the ball back, standing off just letting there players run with the ball. Something is not right.

I feel like tw has this philosophy about how football should be played, but it's a bloody stupid one. I bloody hate disorganised football teams. You're a football manager, there is essentially one basic job - get them organised. Everything else is built on that base. If you cant do it, youre not a football manager.

That was a disgrace. I cannot remember a Darlo team for a long time look so off the pace, disinterested, outfought, little desire and where do we start with TW.!

I have said it before but the players he has signed has weakened the squad, no question. With the exception of Ainge who gives his absolute all, the rest look as though as they are not bothered. Nicholson did will in flashes but please tell me what Hughes gives the team, unbelievable.

We have some “nice” players but against tough, rugged teams like Curzon and Altringham, we just are not strong enough and cannot compete. Yes, if like Blyth did, they sit back and let us have the ball we are fine but get in our faces, close us down etc we are gutless.

Burn and Collins are simply not good enough and sorry, but Trotman, much as he is one of our “nice” players, cannot defend!

No leaders at all apart from Ainge. Clearly TW does not rate Collins, so why on earth let our only other natural centre half go on loan and end up with kids on the bench at this stage of the season.

Didn’t like his appointment at the time and have seen nothing to change my mind. Yes, seems a decent guy, but tactically unaware and out of his depth.
