Ah, so you don't like smaller teams having to play smaller teams to quality.... but it's ok for bigger teams to only play smaller teams to qualify, thanks to the co-efficient?

Sorry. Nah. They waltz through not only because they're better teams, but because they're playing teams that are significantly weaker than them.

And if a side is significantly weaker, they have no right competing in a tournament to find the best side in Europe. The whole point of competition is to find the best, not so sides can have a jolly couple of weeks out. There is no point a side qualifying for a major tournament if they stand no chance of winning it. It undermines the entire integrity of the competition.

I notice you use big and small. I prefer the descriptions good and poor. League D sides in the Nations League are poor. It's why they're in the bottom league. Therefore they have no right to qualify by only playing other poor teams.

The poor teams get weeded out in qualifying, while the best teams advance. It's how it should be. Otherwise it just becomes like those shite school sportsdays where everyone gets a prize for taking part.

Frankly, i couldn't give a monkeys if they're not in the perceived top 24 sides in Europe. Just like I don't care if the sides at the World cup are not the top 32 best, because I think it's important that we play a global game.

We do play a global game. Every team has the opportunity to qualify for the major tournaments. They play the same number of games in a qualifying group against the same opposition as everyone else in the group. If they lose to the other sides, they deserve not to qualify because they aren't good enough. If you qualify in the current system, you're there on merit. It's an entirely fair premise.

If you want an example of exclusionary logic gone all wrong, take a look at the cricket world cup.

The Cricket World Cup has it spot on. The CWC had it wrong back in 2007, when it allowed all and sundry to take part. You wound up with a bloated competition, with one sided group matches which were a waste of everyone's time. For the same reasons, Euro 2016 was a farce, while Euro 2012 was an excellent competition in terms of matches being equal, unpredictable, competitive and generally of good quality.

If teams want to qualify, do so on merit, not be given a free pass in. None of the teams who've missed out (Netherlands, Bermuda, Kenya, Scotland etc) stood a chance of winning it, so there's no point in them being there. Meanwhile, we see genuinely competitive fixtures befitting a finals tournament. Not one-sided mismatches with the weaker side more intent on damage limitation. One sided mismatches on the biggest stage do more to damage the image of the sport.

Afghanistan are the one "developing" nation to qualify for the next Cricket World Cup. They've worked hard on developing their infrastructure, facilities, coaching quality. They topped the qualifying tournament and are there on merit. Add in six additional places, and you get a farcical group stage of one-sided mismatches, that is embarrassing for the sport's development.

A side like Malta will gain nothing in terms of development by reaching a tournament under false pretences, and then getting hammered in their three group games.
Nor is there any evidence that playing in major tournaments inspires greater development long term. There's always an initial immediate peak of course, but that dies down and things return to normal. Proper sustained development requires investment in infrastructure, better technical coaching of players, advanced fitness regimes etc.

If he does play for Gibraltar, that will put the Kibosh on him playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid in future.

Heard he has had clearance from our management team, "Rock on, Tommy!"

Won't playing for Gibraltar ruin his chances of playing for England? :D

Priestley play 13 times for Gibraltar. Its not clear from article how much Farsley got per appearance. It was qualifying for 2016 Euros- so games would be 2104-2016. He made 12 of his 13 appearances in that time, but presumably some were friendlies.

I am guessing its not £21,000 per appearance - would be a brilliant earner if it was

What a ridiculous comment. Our top scorer, one of leagues top scorer, and all points accumulated so far he has been majority responsible for. And if it brings the club even more money to what he has already managed to raise us then good on the lad.

3 games ago seems like it comes under the ‘recently’ tag.

If he doesn’t score all game or play 9/10 he’s a disgrace.

Also he’s spent some time playing without his proper strike partner and has been playing slightly wider

Well last 2 home games, Altrincham not a single player came out of that game with any credit, not even a MOM was announced. Saturday considering he was playing left wing I thought he done well when he had the ball. I just find the original comment crazy, as a Darlington fan we should be proud of any player recognised as an international even if it was a player on the fringes of the squad.

I'm now getting grief off the grumpy arse wife for keeping my 10 year old up past 9.30 to watch Reece Styche. The protestation that it was a special occasion as a Darlington player had not played internationally for 10 years (Franz Burgmeier) was not accepted. Ridiculous.

We got a few mentions tonight. He's been on 15 minutes before getting booked for persistent fouling.

In a training camp for the upcoming fixtures, so will miss the FC United game next week if he's selected.

Makes you wonder if they've been watching him lately?

To be fair to Syche, he hasnt been getting the service. Which has resulted in him taking pot shots from 30 yards.
In my opinion he is one of the best strikers in the division and the whole team should be built to provide him with the chances.
Quite clearly the partnership hasn't worked with Ainge - which I presume the tactics are to hit it long to Ainge and for him to flick the ball on to Styche, so he can pick the ball up facing the defenders - as Styche is very good at dropping the shoulder when one on one with a defender.

It could result in us playing the same team that beat Telford last time we lost him to Gibraltar, it could also mean a slicker faster passing team that wins a game. I really do hope so, a change is as good as a rest they say, maybe by default we find our best playing style for the players at the managers disposal. Something has to change for the better.

I don’t buy that the Styche and Ainge partnership has failed. It worked earlier in the season and they haven’t had a massive chance to play together recently. We need to understand that Ainge hasn’t been fully fit for weeks

Don`t think any of our players look fully fit compared to other teams we have played

Good luck to the lad if he is selected for Gibraltar, and to them too. Hopefully, he will get a goal or three or at least have a good game and regain his confidence as his lack of form and goals is a monkey (or should that be Barbary ape?) on his back. ;)

Its a good learning curve for him, so what he gets a yellow card again , it's the experience of the whole new set up and work ethic and tactics
