Jimmy Lawton

Post by Alfie » Sat Jan 19, 2019 8:05 pm

One for the older fans. Earlier today the club announced that former player Jimmy Lawton had died. He played for the club 1961-66 - I think this was in two spells either side of a move to Everton which didn't seem to work out. I remember him as what today would be called an old fashioned centre forward. I'm not sure what the players contractual situation was in those days, but I think during the offseason he did some painting and decorating with teammate Alan Sproates.

We sold him to Swindon and Alan Sproates signed for us as part of the deal.

What stands out for me was Lawton's form in the 1964/5 season.
In an below average team (we finished 17th), he scored 29 goals. Two were in a brilliant 4-1 cup replay against Hartlepool in front of a packed Feethams (15,000), which got us a home tie against Arsenal in the third round.

He was a good, old fashioned CF, quite pacey for a big lad and could certainly strike a ball.

60 goals in his 120 games...First spell...
3 in 20 on his second stint after Swindon & Watford....
I seem to remember he signed for Swindon the day after he tore them a new one...
Powerful Centre forward great in the air...

RIP Jimmy

Spot on there Chris, I remember that game well against Swindon, he was unplayable that night and probably his best game in a Darlo shirt.I think it may have been a league cup game and they were at least a division higher than us but not 100% certain but you will probably know with your memory.

I'm sure the Northern Echo's picture archives will have loads of original photos of him terrorising defences in the black and white hoops. Footage will be more difficult.
