Simon Ainge, 19 appearances as a centre-forward last season, 4 goals & 2 assists.

Is that good enough next season? Especially if AA goes with his preferred 1 up top.

Rotate between him, Laing & Galbraith for centre-half and try to off-load Burn.

No, it's not good enough clearly - however that doesn't mean he's not capable of better if he regains some fitness and the system used suits him.

That said, I doubt that the system will suit him if it's primarily one up front as he'll be isolated and unlikely to be mobile enough to cover te ground required. He's also in to his 30s so is naturally going to find it hard to wind the clock back to the same level of fitness he had before his injury when he was in his 20s.

I think he's worth having as an option up front but I wouldn't build the forward line around him.

He had all of last pre-season to get himself fit and couldn’t manage it. He’s also just finished a 35+ game season, he should be up to it!

The management accepting some of the shocking states that returned last pre-season resulted in a relegation fight. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a group of un-fitter players over the past 10 years.

There was a lack of diligence last summer in making several of the signings and we paid the price right through the spine of the team.

T.W referred to Ainge as his "talisman" :wtf: (thought to have magical powers and bringer of good luck)

He'd be good in defence IF he's happy to be at Darlo and playing in that position.

at least we're not the only clubs this happens so - and it happens to much bigger clubs and where much bigger money is chucked around.

This talk of dodgy signings reminds of the well funny story of Ali Dia and how he got a contract at Southampton - from Wikipedia --

"After a playing career at the lower levels in France and Germany, and having already failed trials at Gillingham and Bournemouth, Dia joined non-league club Blyth Spartans, where he made only one substitute appearance – on 9 November 1996 in a Northern Premier League game against Boston United.[citation needed]

Days later, Dia was signed by Southampton manager Graeme Souness, after Souness received a phone call purporting to be from Liberian international and then-FIFA World Player of the Year, George Weah. "Weah" told Souness that Dia was his cousin, had played for Paris Saint-Germain, and had played 13 times for his country. None of this was true, and the phone call to Souness was made by a fellow university student of Dia's, suggesting that he should give Dia a chance with Southampton.[4] Souness was convinced, and Dia was signed on a one-month contract.

Dia played just one game for Southampton, wearing the number 33 shirt, against Leeds United on 23 November 1996; he had originally been scheduled to play in a reserve team friendly against Arsenal, but the match was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. In the match against Leeds, he came on as a substitute for the injured Matthew Le Tissier after 32 minutes, but was later substituted himself (for Ken Monkou) in the 85th minute;[5] Leeds won the match 2–0. Le Tissier said: "He ran around the pitch like Bambi on ice; it was very embarrassing to watch."[6][7][8]"

When we get to half the team being ex Blyth does that mean we have to go for another name change?

Bit like the Alessandro Zarrelli story too https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alessandro_Zarrelli

Had no idea (iDia?) Dia had played for Blyth (1 sub app in the NPL) before Soton and went on to 'heed (8 whole apps!) and Spennymoor, according to Wikipedia.

Armstrong likes him (Obviously), he is good at running with the ball apparently. Sounded like Armstrong fancies an attacking front line along the lines of:-

Rivers Thompson Holmes
New Striker

Although question of where that leave Nicholson, we need a decent striker and what are the other options, maybe Nicholson is one of those.

So from last night it sounds like we are very much in for Jameson & Maguire, but both have offers from full-time clubs. The latter also has a ridiculous offer from a team in our league including a huge signing on fee which DJ has said that we won’t offer. FL clubs couldn’t even rival the package on offer.

AA has said that he is working on both, but has back-ups if they don’t materialise.

Laing was also basically confirmed as signing too.

Rivers also signed for us having being offered more money at Spennymoor.

I wonder if Spennymoor fans are still in denial of the huge amount of investment going on at their club? You kind of didn’t mind them in the Northern League up to the NPL, they could pay big wages, but we could too and we could compete. However as we have both risen to this level they have blown us out of the water with what they can offer.

The sooner that there are some FFP rules at the top level of non-league the better. Some rules focusing around the amount of loss a football club can make and look at putting a stop to artificially increased sponsorship deals the better.

So it was alright whilst we could compete and blow other teams out the water finance wise, but now we can't it's not? Only the "bigger" clubs should have a chance at glory?

No that isn’t what I said.

We could compete because we - largely - brought in what we could afford. Although I do accept that we did have to rely on cash-calls through a few different methods to cover short-falls as a result of over-spending.

What I am saying is, is that there needs to be an element of sustainability around clubs at this level. FFP operates across the PL & FL to restrict clubs making huge losses, however there is nothing in place in non-league.

Whilst FFP doesn’t stop clubs from positing losses, it would help to balance the field out a bit, IMO. It would be a deterrent to bank-rolled village clubs or vanity projects having millions unsustainably pumped in to them every year buying the way to the top.

Of course, we did offer big wages, but couldn't actually afford to and so we as fans had to bail the club out more than once to get up the league's.

We've become more sensible with our spending since Gray left, whilst Spenny have continued to spend big because Groves can afford it.

Interesting to know at what level you think FFP should stop? We wouldn't have got this far if it were in place in the Evostick, for example.

Initially I think you’d have to start at the very top of non-league where it would be easier to regulate due to the more comprehensive and professional set-ups at that level. This would then act as a deterrent for any individual wanting to buy their way up the leagues, and not see the likes of Salford, Fylde, FGR etc invest millions in to players to get to the promised land (FL).

We would still have been competitive in the NPL on a sustainable budget, but yes, we probably wouldn’t have won the league that season. Under FFP regulations, as far as I am aware, you don’t need to break-even, but losses are capped and over-inflated commercial/sponsorship deals are clamped down on.

I wonder how schemes like BTB would be viewed? Technically that's no different to a single owner lumping in £100k to cover costs. I doubt it would be looked upon kindly.

If of course we purchased advertising boards or something then it would he fine, but then I guess there's tax implications.

Yes in theory we are financially doping Darlo with BTB, the only difference to most it's not a loan so can be offset to ensure losses occur and tax savings in other areas etc. and then claimed back when the fans finally turn after the winning stops.

I don't think they will be any action to change it at this level, Salford lost £32k a week whilst wininng the Nat North. The league probably don't want to stop the owners like Salford, Spenny etc. which rules would stifle them or they would just find a way round it.

AA hopeful of bringing in Jameson, and he has a deadline of Friday to make his decision before AA goes away on holiday.

Says he is speaking to players and is hopeful of bringing in definitely one by Friday, if not two more depending on how things go.
