I think a lot of clubs will be mortally damaged by these turn of events. We will survive & be in a lot better financial position than many clubs around us. Therefore our position will be strengthened.
Again, out of interest, how so?

Given we are in the same situation as these other clubs what makes us an exceptional case?
Yeah I was hoping for hard facts from Pete..

We all want to know what your job is too Pete - with all this travelling around and that, are you a James Bond type spy?

Perhaps we could turn this into a fund raiser. Pete could post a cryptic clue on line each day and we could pledge £1 at a time to guess his secret occupation until someone gets it right and the mystery is revealed.

My first guess is something outdoors like a forestry commission ranger as he often seems to be in some isolated places.

Pete let slip a while back that he interviews people. I reckon he works for the council or some public body as some type of assessor.

Yes I work for a market research company & I work all over the North East & North Yorkshire. But I am asked to work further afield & I've worked extensively in West Yorkshire, the Midlands & last weekend I was working in Northampton, which was a load of cobblers. Sadly my work was stopped yesterday & like many others I face an uncertain future. Sorry it was so boring!!

Well that's one mystery solved.

But you still haven't explained how Darlington will emerge in a better position than other clubs following the corona virus outbreak?

Joking apart I hope it won’t be too long before you are back at work at Pete. I think many people are going to have to face some difficult times ahead and lets hope there is going to be a big bounce back in the economy coming soon.

On this point, it wouldn't be hugely surprising if a few benefactors get through this and realise they can't (or don't want to) chuck money into a football club for the forseeable future. Although of course I imagine this will hit us too - we have 100s of benefactors - it possible won't be as shocking for us as it would be for clubs losing their sole benefactor.

This is pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things at the moment mind.

Probably as al_quaker above and myself have pointed out because we have 500 regular small investors and supporters and not a single owner.
I can see Uncle Brad continuing to pump money in to see out the crisis, but Raj, I wouldn't bet on him continuing to fund Pools.

Agree with Pete that we may emerge in better shape than some other clubs because we have already cut our cloth to match our means and many others are still living beyond their means.
It does not mean it will be easy but we are not carrying as many financial liabilities as many others. We have an excellent set of volunteers and the financial nouse of DJ as well as AA who can build a squad on limited resources.

Sadly the reality for us is we will be weaker next season in terms of budget but will others be weaker, who knows and not something I want to concentrate on as we can only control our own future.

At the moment we are expecting to spend more money than we would of from the EB Season Ticket as we pay players but lost out on say £25k/£30k.
Boost the Budget likely to be down as our fan base/owners deal with their own personal financial challenges.

Tough times for all at the moment, those with rich owners will come out best and the rest of us will have to do what we can.

That only applies to the rich owners who don't decide they have more important commitments elsewhere. How many will decide that it's a hobby they can no longer justify?

Not wrong there, joejaques. Lot of clubs being propped up as vanity projects. Will be very interesting to see how deep their commitment to their club really is.

This is a very good point. Perhaps it helps to explain Pete's view.

A lot of normal people have lost money up to now (me!) the rich business types stand to lose big money.

Think players are going to find the contracts they are offered for next season ( whenever that may be) at many clubs, especially in non league will be for a lot lower wages as the whole economy if going to be weaker. The point about previously rich owners is a valid one, but even at fan owned clubs, there will be less money available. Fans whether owners or not are going to have to make careful decisions about economic choices eg donate to clubs or put food on table, even go to games or not.

Clubs are not going to be able to put up prices without it having an effect on attendances. Imagine what has happened with the hospitality this season happening with gate prices, purchases of programmes, refreshments etc.

The potential effects of this current situation is likely to hit the economy as hard, if not harder than the 2008 economic recession, especially when the country was only coming out of that recession now.

Worrying times for everyone, and every sporting organization and every business.

The outcome of this virus has the potential to affect the country in more ways than people imagine. Its not just a 2 month or so pause on football games, then we all carry on as before. Already peop-le are losing their jobs and businesses closing down never to reopen

Yes. The best thought on here so far about this was from oldgit (I think) - who said that in the future things could well be described as pre, and post virus.

There are still people online denying this problem even exists - they are selfish idiots.

The RFU has just announced that they are ending the season for all but the top flight so hard times ahead for our landlords.

They hardly get any crowds, so I would presume that they would lose money on each game they play. Darlington MP will also be in trouble, especially as would seem likely Tom Jones is cancelled at the Arena. Yes I think a lot of clubs that have rich benefactors will be extremely worried, as the owners may pull out having lost so much of their wealth due to the Coronavirus outbreak. Players wages will decrease as they will have to be realistic, but any clubs that have a rich benefactor could really profit from this as they'll still be able to attract decent wages & so naturally the best talent will want to play for them.

I think a source of financial issue always will be players wages. 20/25 years ago wages weren't a massive issue, but since the introduction of sky and the amount of £££ they've put in, clubs have made more money meaning that players could ask for more money and this has spiralled through the divisions. Also the introduction of billionaire owners has contributed to this.

Wonder if anyone knows how much wages are in relation to our costs/revenue

According to the latest published accounts:

Turnover: £677K
Playing Staff: £365K
Coaching Staff : c£70K

So players were 54% of turnover or for £1 of revenue earned we spent 54p of it on players
Players and coaches 64%

Costs were £800K
