I agree with this if he moved to a lower division which seems likely then I think we'll all agree it would be an acknowledgement by Thommo that he's not quite good enough at this level. If he stays at this level then I am wrong! Surely you always want to play at the highest possible level for as long as you can? I am happy with AA's decision if he was offered reduced terms.Darlofan97 wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 2:47 pmI too am gutted to see Thompson leave.QUAKERMAN2 wrote: ↑Sat May 16, 2020 2:31 pmIt's bad enough Thommo going and will be even worse if he ends up at that lot.Would rather it was South Shields if anyone.Darlofan97 wrote:I don’t think anybody could begrudge him a move to Spennymoor. However, what we have to remember is that he had a limited impact last season (a lot less mins & appearances than usual) and we seemed to do quite well. I don't think out wide was an area of particular weakness last season, not with Rivers & Donawa anyway.
And, from a financial point of view, he signed a new deal when the budget was at its peak & when he was probably at his peak as a footballer. Can we justify paying someone a decent chunk of the budget to sit - predominately - on the bench? Probably not. He's 31 now and by the time next season starts, probably pushing on 32.
Nonetheless, what a fantastic footballer. Those seasons in the Northern League & the one after in the Evo-Stik he was simply unplayable.
Thommo

I,m another that is saddened by this announcement, but if Steve has a better offer and guarantee of first team football then that's his decision, remember Steve has been bench warming a while now so at 31maybe it was time, thanks for the memories Steve good luck for the future ,I certainly won't forget the goals that you scored helping Darlington FC to promotion time and again.

Re: Thommo
I thought Thompson should have started in many of the games that he didn't this season. He ended up coming on at times when a miracle was required and (like any human being) couldn't always deliver it.
Very disappointed.

Re: Thommo
Thanks, Thommo. Would have been better if we could have all been at a final home game to show our appreciation properly with a standing ovation, but this rotten virus has robbed us all of the chance. Best of luck for the future.
Re: Thommo
Agreed it would have been a fitting end to his Darlo career.

Re: Thommo
I think its the right time for all, he got his 100 goals which he thoroughly deserved, but has looked out of sorts this season and hasn't made much of an impact - but what a fantastic player and servant for the club.
In Alun we trust and he needs to be able to clear our who he wants.

Re: Thommo
It would great to see a friendly at home against the team Thommo signs for, this would give us a chance to show our appreciation for all his efforts for Darlo over the previous years he's been with the club. And we haven't played South Shields for ages
Help get the club back to Darlo by helping to spread the word about the "Back to Darlo!" fund. Re: Thommo
As long as it isn't York...they still owe us a big friendly...
Re: Thommo
Would be really good to hear that a game could be organised for the fans to show their appreciation of a quality player for us over the 8 years thomo has been with us. Or even thomo showing up pre-match once we get started again.
Re: Thommo
Highly unlikely to arrange a friendly against a team in the same league, especially if that team is Spendy.

Re: Thommo
I'd rather he played for a darlo x11 v someone and at least we would be supporting him for darlo and not the team he signs for

Re: Thommo
Also unlikely to happen since his new team would probably object for injury and insurance reasons.
Re: Thommo
Where do you think thomo will be plying his trade next season. This league or below .dependant upon where he ends up as to how darlo fans receive him should he play against us. Hero to zero for some i would suggest. But hopefully the first hero he has been good for Darlington fc.

Re: Thommo
Can't see it! He can barely get into our team at present, and he would know that this would be a tad controversial.
South Shields for me.

Re: Thommo
Doesn’t really matter. Spennymoor are just another team in our league. They’d like to think they’re our rivals but they’re not and they never will be.QUAKERMAN2 wrote: ↑Mon May 18, 2020 2:18 pmGod I hope not, doesn’t bear thinking about.AndyPark wrote:Spennymoor.

Our rivals are Hartlepool.
Re: Thommo
Maybe he is sick of juggling a full time job and playing at this sort of level. Would make a great signing for an ambitious Northern League team such as Stockton or Shildon.

Re: Thommo
I’ve said it before, but nobody should begrudge Thompson moving to Spennymoor.
He is a footballer at a pretty low-level with bills to pay, just like everyone else.
After all, it was our prerogative to give him less minutes last season, and it was our prerogative to offer him reduced terms for next season (probably on the basis he would get similar if not less minutes next season).

Re: Thommo
Agree with this he is entitled to go wherever he wants and wherever he feels he gets the best deal.
It shouldn't really bother us where he goes. If he is an opponent next year then so be it.

Re: Thommo
Spendmore have just gave 7 players new contracts so I can't see Tommo signing there, but if he does good on him get as much money as he can

I actually thought the opposite. Since Roberts has left to go back down south then they’ll be looking for an attacking wide man to replace himHarrytheQuaker wrote:Spendmore have just gave 7 players new contracts so I can't see Tommo signing there, but if he does good on him get as much money as he can

A few people on the Tin Shed adamant he's signing for Spenny.

Re: Thommo
If he's good enough for Spennymoor then he's good enough for us.
This is a classic case of a Manager favouring players that he has brought in over inherited personnel.
He's definitely better than one lightweight winger from Blyth (for example) and he's certainly not over the top due to age or fitness.
That's unless he's a bad influence in other ways. I would be astonished if that was the case.

Re: Thommo
Having initially thought it unlikely, I now wouldn't be surprised if he ends up at Spennymoor. Other than the reputational damage Thompson will suffer with some members of our fanbase, it probably ticks a lot of boxes for both parties
