Used to play for Boro - would be an amazing signing imo
Did he have a spell at York I seem to remember.

Yes he did, he had two spells there on loan.

He's out of contract this summer.

I find comments on Wrightson a little bit odd if I’m honest.

He is only 22. He can cover out wide on the right or left. His minutes at Blyth have been fairly limited and last season he played in a shocking team.

For the wages he would likely command (not much) and his versatility it makes sense (as it equally did last summer). It would be quite a low-risk signing.

From what I’ve seen of him, he is certainly a bit better than some are making out and he would give us something different.

Gone are the days where every signing we make will be a significant one (i.e a Maddison, Ainge, Burn) on £500+ per week. You need cheaper alternatives to bolster the quality you do have and focus the relatively big spending on the key positions (which everyone has identified).

If he can be worked on then he could be a decent player, but his end product has always been an issue. If you could get him ‘Very Cheap’ then wouldn’t have a big problem

His minutes to goals/assists is actually decent. It’s difficult to judge with such limited game-time spread across a number of seasons. He is definitely more of an impact player but at 22, still has time to improve.

I certainly wouldn’t be writing it off, like some have, for the reasons I’ve outlined.

Certainly had a decent impact for a Blyth side that reached the play-offs.

But if it was a choice between Wrightson and Lambert who would you choose? I'm presuming Lambert is a target of AA and his versatility of playing ACM and out wide like he did at Blyth will enable to AA to bring in his couple of forwards he's wanting

For me I'd rather have Lambert. We already have Donawa, Rivers and Holmes to cover wide. Add to that if we get another CF Campbell can cover those areas too.

Winger is always an area I feel like is well covered by a loanee if needed. Plenty of players in academies with decent pace and skill and it's a position where potentially any lack of physicality needed for mens football isn't highlighted as much as it may be in the centre of the pitch.

I'd rather focus spending the budget on the spine of the team that we need to compete first, if there is enough left for Wrightson after that then give him a go. But first let's lock down:

Goalkeeper: Hemmings, Turner, Brynn etc

CB: (not seen any names released that I think fit the bill yet).

CM: Lambert, gives a good option and could play a more advanced role infront of Hatfield, Wheatley, Atkinson or Hedley etc and potentially cover the wide areas as he did at Blyth.

CF: still really really want O'Neill back he was so suited to us and how Alun likes to play. Maguire undoubtedly quality at this level but wonder whether he would actually solve the problem we had last season, which was an inability to change it up and go a bit more direct with crosses etc in the final third.

Seen others mention Boyes, wouldn't touch him with a barge pole till we know what's going on with any potential betting bans.

I agree getting the spine of team is the most important factor, get this right first, then see whats left .

You could probably make a case for both an attacking midfielder and a winger signing. Not saying it’ll both be Lambert & Wrightson, but we will need to cover the minutes Holness & Thompson played last season somehow.

You could drop Reid back in to a 2 (like he did at Blyth) with Hatfield, Wheatley or Atkinson and play Lambert further up.

All speculation of course and in a way, it’s a nice problem to have. We have a solid core of 13/14 to add to and most are flexible to cover a few different positions which doesn’t make the recruitment as clear-cut barring the obvious (GK,CB,CF).

Joe Tait might be a good bet for a return if Galbraith leaves.

Joe seems to be just the type of CB AA is looking for, tough, no nonsense, chips in with the odd goal and very vocal.Wouldnt say no to this tbh.

I'd have no problem with Tait returning, think it would be a rather amusing relationship with the Tin Shed

Yes who could forget his own goal for us at Spennymoor a year or two ago!

We have a fantastic steady squad of 13 and it seems AA has been given enough resources to add 5 decent players to that. Looking at his recruitment last summer then I have no worries with his judgement.

If Lambert wants to be part of that then would be more than happy, two strikers would be amazing, GK and a central defender. That's it job done in terms of squad size and budget probably.

The players mentioned that AA is interested in are all of a decent enough level that improve our squad, obvious we need to increase our goals and decrease our conceded.

Not sure I would want Joe Tait back either. Seem to remember he jumped ship from us to Spennymoor, then never signed to renew contract at Spenny to apparently go abroad but signed for York. AA has said he wants players who want to play for the Quakers, not sure Tait fits that description (have watched him acouple of times at York games this season and was not particularly impressed).

Happy to leave it to AA, he will get the right players in I am sure.

I seem to remember Tait was 4th choice in the pecking order when he signed for Spennymoor. He didn’t “jump ship” at all.

I don’t get why people take it so badly when players leave us - especially for game-time that we don’t give them.

Not quite the case as I recall. Think Tait left originally to go to Gateshead and a full time contract. He also had a spell back on loan in the Evostik North days but then when he left Heed he opted to sign for Spenny.
Agree with you 50 years not sure he would be an improvement on what we have and has never impressed me when playing against us. Also as you suggest not convinced he really has the desire we would ideally like and would he fit in with the present squad ? I agree we will trust in AA to bring in the right players but would not be upset to pass on Tait.

Tait would improve us.

He has just came off the back of 32 appearances for a club top of our league. Watson also rewarded him with a one year contract last summer - I think he had a spell as captain for them the season before too.

For all he’s the pantomime villain when we come up against him, he is a good player.

I think there was a little bit of a carry on the last time he left us over a signed contract. I remember he left us the first time to sign for Gateshead, but the second time it was after a loan-spell where he chose to sign for Spenny - at the time we had Hunter, Brown and White.

I heard he has recently started studying a Degree, so it would probably fit nicely with part-time football.

At 30? Do you judge that on the back of his two games for York against us this season where they conceded once?

Some strange comments on here, in particular about Wrightson, and now Tait.

There’s an account called Non League Guy which has linked us with Sol Brynn (Middlesbrough goalkeeper) and Adam Wrightson. No idea how credible those rumours are, but who doesn’t enjoy a bit of speculation? They do seem Armstrong-type signings but like I say, I don’t know if it’s true or not.

AA said he wanted a squad of around 18 players, supplemented by some youth players. If Galbraith and Holness depart, that leaves us with 13. I could see a GK, CB, wide forward, CF and possibly a specialist full back.
Same Twitter account is suggesting McGuire is on his way to us.

Tait wasn’t good enough to always get a start for us several years ago, I’d be disappointed with that one.

If you’re talking about his time with us during his loan-spell, he did make quite a few appearances if I remember right. We also had Hunter (who made TNE’s Team of the Year as centre-half) and White who we needed at the time for his experience. Gary Brown was also our captain and he played right-back.

We basically had four quality centre-halves for that level, and out of all of them, Tait has gone on to be the most successful. (Appreciate this wasn’t possible with White due to his age).

IIRC our defensive was very solid that season and we finished 2nd, yes Tait wasn’t always a starter (after joining mid-season) but then he went to Spennymoor for four years and won promotion from the Evo-Stik D1N and Evo-Stik Premier.

He then captained York, Watson gave him a new deal and he has played over 90% of their games which sees them top of the NLN.

He’s a solid centre half, no nonsense, and a leader.

It’s all about opinions but the one that matters is Alun Armstrong’s.

Exactly this!

To be honest I don’t think AA has signed a bad player for us as yet - I’ve been impressed with all the players he has brought in
