One of the lads in the picture from the changing room at Anfield used to work for me, I remember him telling me about that final.
Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
Wasn't there a young lad Paul Robinson who we sold to Newcastle around the same time. - wonder what happened to him. That's unless I am misremembering yet again in which case just forget it.
Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
You are correct we sold Coppinger and Robinson to Newcastle for a joint fee of £500k. Robinson played a few first team games including being selected ahead of Shearer for a home defeat by Sunderland. Seem to recall it made Rudd Gullit very unpopular with many Geordies.
Robinson moved to Wimbledon and had a spell at Torquay. I think he may have played at the Arena for them against us. He ended up in the Northern League and played for the likes of Jarrow Roofing Newton Aycliffe and Hebburn.

Great article - remember thinking the money we got for those lads was incredible
Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
It was incredible. I think we owed a big thank you to Kenny Dalglish and were lucky that he was mates with Hodgy and willing to do him a favour.Comfortably_numb wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:23 amGreat article - remember thinking the money we got for those lads was incredible
Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
Think you are stretching it a bit to say King Kenny was doing his old team mate a favour! I would say Dalglish was a rather successful Manager, wouldn't you, so he obviously saw something in both players he signed.Old Git wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:31 amIt was incredible. Old Git when you're going at it with Gramps it becomes tedious but at least most of the time he argues intelligently and has a well thought through view. I'm not sure why the patronising behaviour but if King Kenny bought these lads I'm sure it was because he saw their potential and not to do Hodgy a favour. He's a true legend for many reasons...sorry I'll have to go as the Easter Bunny's at the door.
Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
So to be clear are you saying Daglish didn't want to sign the players in the first place but convinced his Board to splash the cash? Or that he did want the players but he agreed an inflated transfer fee? Which is it?Old Git wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 3:39 pmAnd I bet you still believe in the tooth fairy. Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
Coppinger was highly rated (can see what that came from now given the story in the article) and Robinson had actually burst into our first team I thought.Old Git wrote: ↑Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:31 amIt was incredible. Arsenal paid a considerably higher fee to Notts County for Jermain Pennant at about the same time if I remember rightly?

Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
Robinson had well and truly burst into our first team. I remember in one game at Feethams he was just ripping through the oppositions defence with his pace, and they were reduced to tugging him back and fouling him.
I'm sure Hodgson's connection with Dalglish would have helped this deal go through. If you read through Hodgson's book there's a number of times that friendships are mentioned in relation to deals being struck.

Re: Great piece on Two ex Darlo players
No intention to offend anyone but have always thought it was not just a coincidence that we were strapped for cash as usual and Kenny Dalglish stepped in to pay 500k for 2 relatively unknown youngsters from a 4th Division team. Robinson had played several games in the first team and Coppinger had not even broken into the team.
Not suggesting anyone did anything wrong but that it was very fortunate for us that the two managers were friends and the deal was a massive boost for our coffers. Think this deal was done in 1988 and about a year later the club was in a bad financial position and George Reynolds had to come in to rescue the club. Where would we have been without that half a million from Newcastle ?
