Random Darlo Nostalgia
You know when a Darlo match comes into your head for no reason at all? Well this is the place to share them! I will start us off:
Rochdale 2-2 Darlington
FA Cup Second Round, 1995
Why: It was a stonking day out. The current Wilbutts Lane seated thing was a massive terrace with a large walkway down the front, the chippy (which is not overrated, BQ) was still there and over 1,000 Darlo fans made the trip down. Pie Boy Burridge was in goal, Simon Shaw got on the scoresheet and only a late equaliser deined us victory and a jaunt to Liverpool in round three. We shall not mention the replay....
Of course, Hodgy had also famously decided to quit before the match, leaving the supporters coach on the way home startled.

Darlington 3-2 Yeovil Town
Reynolds Arena - Sat 21 February 2004
For some reason it just sticks in the memory. It was end to end stuff with both teams having plenty of chances, Darlington having 14 shots at goal and Yeovil having 15. Then Barry Conlon scored then almost straight away from kick off they went down the field and scored and after that wainwright scored 2 and then they scored again on 90 mins to make it a tense finish. Also Teggart getting sent off.

I remember that game because a woman sat behind me shouted "jump" to Barry Conlon when he went up against a Yeovil player who at 6'8 was a fair bit taller than him!

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
darlo 2 boro 1 fa cup !! as a ten year old on me uncles shoulders in the tin shed for most of the match untill it started kicking off s*** me self but loved it at the same time!! i remember loydy crichton helping this boro fan to his feet and then upper cutting him to send him back down!!oh the memories!!
Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
I seem to vaugely recollect an auto windscreen game vs Grimsby around 1991, andy toman scored a hattrick and we won 3-1. What made it stick in my mind is two of the grimsby players were sent off for fighting each other! I also think gary birtles played in this game although I have may have imagined that...
Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
I was at that one, didnt know Budgy was in goal for the 1st game though. Can't remember Shaw's goal but I can remember being right at the front when Paul Olsson ran over celebrating Darlo's 2nd. Went by car and only found out about Hodgy leaving when they announced it on match of the day which was a bit of a shock, they even flashed up a pic of him with a mullett from his Liverpool days!Geordie Quaker wrote:You know when a Darlo match comes into your head for no reason at all? A game that sticks in my mind more so was Chester 4 - 1 Darlo the week before (I think?). Our only away league defeat that season and we played them off the park.

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
A Darlo game I look back fondly on was the last ever game at Boothferry Park in 2002 . . think it was around Christmas time although I could be wrong.
Hull had a parade of legends before hand and there was a big party atmosphere and then Darlo grabbed a 1-0 away win thanks to a Simon Betts goal. Ingham on loan from Sunderland had a stormer in goal. I just remember singing "We're gonna piss on your party."
Then both sides moved to new stadiums and erm enjoyed successive promotions and administrations respectively . . .Ho hum.

God almighty in the 30 years supporting the Quakers there's so many games that stand out here's five.
5. Wolves 5 Darlo 3 a Steve Bull hatrick tremendous game, I remember travelling down on the supporters coach and being escorted to the ground by hundreds of police on horseback and with dogs.
4. Barnet 0 Darlo 2 the year we got promoted from the Conference, this victory was huge in the scehme of things as we went to their place 3 points behind in second place. I remember being sat in the corner of the stand with the Darlo supporters surrounded by Barnet fans. Oh the abuse they got as they walked out dejected.
3. Welling 0 Darlo 1 Coatsworth scoring the goal that got us promoted from the Conference. The tension was unbearable not seen so many fans in a ground unable to watch the game.
2. Boro 0 Darlo 0 Fa Cup at Ayresome Park in front of 19000. Fred Barber pulling off some superb saves to keep us in the cup.
1. Darlo 2 Boro 1 Fa cup replay, crap goals but what an atmosphere. Boro fans storming the pitch to try and get the game abandoned and the mayhem after the final whistle supporters battling on the cricket pitch.

Wrexham 0-2 Darlington
FA Cup First Round, 2002
Why: Not sure why it has always stuck in my head but it was during a period when I was attending every single game. I don't recall us winning too many games that season away from home and we pulled out a very good result with goals in the second half. It was also the start of that FA Cup run which ended against Farnborough and blowing a chance to play Arsenal in the following round.

Hereford United 1 - 2 Darlington
Div 3 Play off semi final first leg, 1996
After going 1-0 down after about 90 seconds, we came back to win 2-1 thanks to THAT looping header, i remember going ape s*** with excitment and getting crushed. Atmoshpere was amazing. Also vaugely remember a huge inflatable bull in the home end and singing "what the fucking hell is that!"

York 7 - Darlington 0, c.1986. York had 2 goals disallowed and hit the bar. It sums up what being a Darlo fan is all about!

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
darlo 5 doncaster 0 all goals scored in second half alan walsh scored a brilliant goal, he got the ball from pat cuff, ran the full length of the pitch before hitting it from about fifteen yards, the other scorers were hawker, charlton, stalker and hamiltonhard to believe thats almost 30 yrs ago

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
Lawman3 - Was that game against York the Freight Rover contest were Gabbas got a hatrick for York ? 1st time i clapped eyes on him and he ripped us to bits with Dale Banton up front if i remember, he soon departed for Sunderland...
Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
I think Canham got a hatrick. York had some decent players including Banton, Houchen and Keith Walwyn. I don't remember Gabbers playing, though.

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
Might have been earlier then - York always had the better of us around that time, remember it tossing it down and getting soaked in the away end.
Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
Just checked Frank Tweddle's Definitive Darlington FC (every home should have one). The 7 - 0 game was a league game in 1985-86 season. The following year we lost 4 - 1 in the Freight Rover.

Yes flip I remember thatgame vividly, about 1200 there and the first half was an absolute shocker. Don't know what was said at half-time, but it certainly worked.hodgie1 wrote:darlo 5 doncaster 0 all goals scored in second half alan walsh scored a brilliant goal, he got the ball from pat cuff, ran the full length of the pitch before hitting it from about fifteen yards, the other scorers were hawker, charlton, stalker and hamiltonhard to believe thats almost 30 yrs ago

I recall when we ended one year losing 7-1 home to Southend and started the new year losing 7-1 at Bradford City.

Darlington 7 Colchester Utd 3, 93-94 season. Amazing game, I almost lost count of the score that night! I think this was Alan Murray's first home game in charge of Darlo, and it's a game which every Darlo fan claims to have been at, even though the attendance on the night was something piss-poor like 1,300.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!
Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
was Mike Pollitt not in goal for the first Rochdale FA cup game? Was it not becuase the board sold Pollitt and Hodgy thought he could get a better price the reason he walked out?
I was on the supporters coach to and could not belive it when the news came through, it was like a blow in the stomach!
PS the Darlo v Boro games also stick in the mind - If only those days could return!

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
Some right old b*****ds on here eh?
RH79, Mike Pollitt was in goal for the 1st round in 1995 at Hartlepool, and that was about his last game for use before going on to bigger and better things at Notts County! Burridge was in goal for both Rochdale Cup ties: I remember his bizarre warm ups at Spotland, and for the home game my Dad still blames him for not coming out for the cross which led to their goal. I would go as far to say that he is still fuming about it, 14 years on.
Super Quaker: you won't hear me claiming to have been at the Colchester game: I was sat in Durham train station until 21:00 waiting for a train that didn't come. I nearly lobbed our coffee table through Ceefax when I got home!

Chester City 4-4 Darlington - 2005/2006 season???
Decided at 10am to go to this one with my mate. Simon Johnson penalty early doors put us 1 up, a couple of chester goals and an Akpo Sodje hat-trick later it was 4-2 with 2 minutes to go.
Lo and behold Chester knock in 2 goals to make it 4-4 courtesy of some nightmare defending from us.
Horribly typical Darlo away day, but the more I think about it Sodje put in one of the best performances I've seen from a Darlo striker that day. Love him or loathe him everything he did was gold in that match. Chester couldn't handle him.

i seem to remember a certain mr greg blundell got 2 that day for chester, probably the last time he scored more than 1 in a game.

Divas - Your Dad isnt the only one who still blames Budgie for not coming for that cross! We should have beaten them and played Liverpool.Geordie Quaker wrote:Some right old b*****ds on here eh?

Re: Random Darlo Nostalgia
I was at the Colchester game, but can hardly remember it now. It was the first ever Darlo game I went to with my mates, and not my dad. Oddly, we spent the entire time on the south terrace.
I'm going to chirp in with Huddersfield 0 - Darlo 2 (2003-04, maybe 05?)
Our first away win with Hodgson back in charge. Driving rain and a vicious wind. Clark got a penalty, followed by the best/luckiest goal Maddo will have ever scored where he wellied it a mile in the air, it caught the wind, and dropped over the keeper. The away end was jumping that day.
Also, there is the 4-1 FA Cup win at Pools in 1995
The away day at Donny with the wind, when Reynolds turned up and taunted us.
And the infamous 4-1 (I think) defeat at Scarborough when Brumwell, and two others got sent off.
