Re: Season 23/24
Wishful thinking here, I wonder if this year we might be able to tempt Boro/Sunderland to send a first team for a friendly. Other clubs at our level seem to get them every year, it must be a decent earner.

We were meant to play Gateshead but they’ve agreed to play Shields instead as part of an agreement in a transfer.

Re: Season 23/24
I just think I nagged more! You're definitely more commited than me. I can't believe there isn't a team available on that Saturday. We usually have them all planned well in advance.
Re: Season 23/24
It is a pity that there is not another game as the team could do with at least playing together with the final first 11 playing in the preferred formation before the season starts. All the pre season games to now have not been able to play the "best 11" in a settled formation yet, so to hit the first game in the league without being able to build up a proper understanding between players will be interesting.
Not sure about anyone else, but on the evidence of the friendlies it feels much like last year, being able to score goals but look vulnerable at the back, especially with a small squad. Wonder if Darlo are considering Sam Saunders on loan from York, over 6 foot Centre half, young, york fans like him (but down the list given the quality of players they have now signed) and has played well in pre season, apparently looking for a loan to national North or South?

Re: Season 23/24
To me we don’t need another centre half but do need another midfielder and a big strong forward.
None will happen as was pretty clear at forum that the budget is spent.
I actually think that the clubs limited expectation will be about right and we have a mid table team.

As long as we don’t suffer too many injuries.Quakerlad wrote: ↑Wed Jul 26, 2023 7:37 pmTo me we don’t need another centre half but do need another midfielder and a big strong forward.

Re: Season 23/24
Need someone to snap me out of this lethargy around this season. Never known as many genuine hard core fans feeling the same. Some even saying they can take it or leave it which is unusual too. Little to no activity on the message board either just a few days to kick off is also unusual.
This time last year we had signed Beck, Hazel, Felix and looking forward to a fit Wheater, amongst others. All exciting known prospects to improve the team. Some excitement.
Not saying some of our new players will not prove to be the same, let’s hope so.
But we know the budget is spent, we have a too small squad, loans are too expensive according to AA so none of them and unless we have a good cup run, no new players in Jan. Situation not going to change for at least 3-5 yrs.
The joys of being a Darlo fan!! See you Saturday

Re: Season 23/24
I know a lot of fans tend to use Twitter/Facebook for interactions, probably why it's dropped a bit on here.Quakerlad wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 1:10 pmNeed someone to snap me out of this lethargy around this season. I think we've made some very shrewd signings, whilst we signed Beck etc last year. We've also got Curry/Platt & Lees who've come in and they will do a great job with us. Beck wasn't exactly firing all guns blazing before his 1st spell, I think Curry will do just as well as he did.
Platt is a banging signing and exactly the type of player we need with height/physicality.
Most of us know that until we have our own ground, we are stagnating where we are with the occasional flicker of the play-offs. All we can do is keep on backing the team we love & hopefully DJ can get this ground with it's funding etc sorted sooner rather the later.Quakerlad wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 1:10 pmBut we know the budget is spent, we have a too small squad, loans are too expensive according to AA so none of them and unless we have a good cup run, no new players in Jan. See you Saturday. Up the Darlo.
Re: Season 23/24
Agree with everything you have said, except don’t think Curry will do for us what Beck did.
It’s this weird feeling though, probably cos I’m getting on a bit, that I really don’t want another 3-5 years of stagnation. Cannot remember feeling a bit “bored” at the thought of the season ahead, ever, in over 50 years and not sure what will shift it. Well I do actually, it’s some big film stars or a euro lottery win, and that’s not gonna happen
. Sad really.

Re: Season 23/24
I agree with you. I might not have that many years of following the team left, and the thought of several seasons of stagnation is not very appealing to me either. Also I fear stagnation could very easily slip into regression if we are not careful. I remember talking to a former manager who told me there are only 2 types of team, those moving forward and those moving backwards, because if you are not improving whilst some around you are, then by definition you are moving backwards.Quakerlad wrote: ↑Mon Jul 31, 2023 3:40 pmAgree with everything you have said, except don’t think Curry will do for us what Beck did.

Having said that I believe we do have a decent squad, and Scunthorpe apart, I don’t see why we should not be in the mix for a playoff place. Keep the faith Quakerlad, we might be better do better than you think.
Re: Season 23/24
Sadly I feel the same. Mid table at best and if it wasn't for the play offs going to seventh place season over by Christmas. Feel like we're treading water waiting for a new ground. We've hit our ceiling without one with the current fan model and like old git I fear we will get caught one year and regress.
Re: Season 23/24
I agree with you, we have hit our ceiling and I think the Board realise that, hence the damping down of expectations for the coming season. However, we have to hope that AA can build a team with what resources we have, that can compete at this level.Darlo_lad wrote: ↑Wed Aug 02, 2023 12:59 pmSadly I feel the same.
