If it’s a midfielder, I hope it’s someone with a bit of bite.

Blimey, wonder how many of our squad Josh would like to move on.This is a big rebuild but good on DJ and the board for backing him considering AA spent his budget.

Former Aston Villa player joins

Darlington have today signed former Aston Villa midfielder Hayden Lindley.

Hayden, who is 21, started his career in the academy at Manchester City and joined Aston Villa in July 2019.

He was a regular in Villa’s Under 18 and Under 21 sides, helping Villa win the FA Youth Cup in 2021, and he also made his senior debut in the third round of the FA Cup against Liverpool in January 2021.

He signed a new contract at Villa in July 2021 and played for the first team at Barrow in the EFL Cup a month later.

Villa loaned him to Newport County for four months in 2022 and he made six appearances for them before returning to Villa for the rest of the 2022-23 campaign.

He was freed in the summer and after going on trial to Cheltenham and Altrincham, signed for Gorcal in the Northern Counties East League on a non-contract basis. He has now agreed to join Quakers for the rest of the season.

Hayden goes into the squad for tonight's home game with Blyth.

We'd like to wish him all the best during his stay with us.

We'd like to thank Gorcal and Altrincham for their help with the signing.

I for one am becoming a bit concerned about signing non-contract players from Leagues below us. Oh well time will tell. Just bought a ticket to stream the game so I can see formyself!

Found this on the Newport website, say a bit of what Hayden's about,

While naturally a defensive midfielder, Hayden has shown his versatility at a young age, having also played as a right-back and centre back last season for the Villa academy.

On the deadline day signing of Hayden, Newport manager James Rowberry said: “I’m delighted to welcome Hayden to the club!

"His leadership qualities as Aston Villa Under-23s captain and his attributes as a midfielder will help us as we aim to make this season a successful one.

"I know you will give Hayden a warm welcome when you see him!”

Welcome to Newport, Hayden!

Certainly going for youth is our Josh. 7 players signed including Hannah and none of them over 21 years old. Not sure whether this is brave or foolish, hope it is the former, but lets get behind the team and give them our support, because if this strategy fails we are sunk.

A young player with good pedigree, Man City have one of the best academies in the world and Villa also producing a lot of quality through their youth system at the moment.

He'll be desperate to prove himself and earn his way back into full time football, no doubt. Sounds like the sort of character we need, willing to drop down and work his way back up the leagues.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Especially from teams who don't exist!

There isn't, nor to the best of my knowledge, has there ever been a "Gorcal FC" in the Northern Counties East League, there is however a Golcar United.

This wouldn't be the first time we have misnamed another club, Preston Cables, Cammell Town and Padlam come to mind.

Maybe they could form their own breakaway League these "Ghost" teams?

Perhaps they still held his registration or something?

I don't think they would hold his registration if he was only on trial with them?

Who knows - it's probably just been thrown in there for the craic, like thanking a made-up team in the Northern Counties East League.
