There was nothing wrong with his workrate on Saturday. What he was doing was holding his position rather than pressing the ball which is what you should do when your holding onto a one goal lead.quakersam wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 2:16 pmHave you been watching the games with your eyes-shut?![]()
Workrate? His workrate on Saturday was non-existent. That last 15 minutes he should have been busting a gut for the team, Will Hatfield was doing more running than him and he’d been on for the previous 85 minutes.
People need to get over this notion of he’s out of position, he needs a big target man. If you’re asked to do a job for your team by a manager, you do it regardless with the same determination and workrate. Whether he’s playing centre forward or right wing I expect him to put a shift in

I’m sorry but he was an absolute disgrace off the bench on Saturday. Hatfield with 75 minutes in the legs was operating at a far greater intensity. His pass to Hatfield on the break was absolutely horrendous too.CrazyDarlo wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 7:39 pmThere was nothing wrong with his workrate on Saturday. Re: Darlo v Chester
Glad someone else noticed that pass which gave Hatfield almost no options. People on here talk about Hazel being wasted having to play with his back to goal, and holding the ball up, which he cant. Here he was fresh, facing the goal, against a tired defence I don't understand why he did not try and outrun the defender (he does has some pace) and shoot like you would expect a player "capable" of getting 20 goals a season to do. Instead he decided to play a weak pass to Hatfield. I just don't get it.darlo_baron wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 9:26 pmI’m sorry but he was an absolute disgrace off the bench on Saturday. Re: Darlo v Chester
Hazel's strengths are definitely not his hold-up/link-up play, even though he did get 11 assists last season.
However, inside the penalty box he is a serial goal-scorer/chance-getter, and that, if he does depart, will be very hard to replace.
He scored 21 non-penalty goals last season. That is ridiculous.
It would be a mistake letting him go; Hazel is an effective centre-forward at NLN level, before you consider how effective he would be at NPL level if we were to go down.

Hazel is arguably one of our best assets on form and Gowling needs to be finding a structure to get him back to top form.
We haven’t got the cash to buy a proven goalscorer but we do have one in the squad we could use a lot better than we currently are.

Another positive Hazel post which is 100% right.Beano wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 10:15 pmExactly this.Darlofan97 wrote: ↑Mon Nov 13, 2023 9:48 pmHazel's strengths are definitely not his hold-up/link-up play, even though he did get 11 assists last season.

It’s clear that he is not in the best of form. Physically maybe because he has played a season and more without a rest and that affects you mentally too, particularly when getting played out of position.
It’s a test of JG,s man management but he really needs to keep Hazel and figure out how to get the best from him. Give him 2 weeks off if it helps and come back refreshed maybe?
Re: Darlo v Chester
Hazel was never the same since coming back from international duty.
Re: Darlo v Chester
I don’t doubt that Jacob Hazel has the ability to be an effective striker at NLN level. However, I am not so sure he still has the desire to do it for Darlington. The lack of energy and commitment he displayed when coming on as a sub on Saturday just looked like he didn’t want to be here. As others have said he had a great opportunity to run in on goal against tired opposition, and just laid off a poor pass to Hatfield. He should have been busting a gut to get into the penalty area and score a goal which would have sealed the game.
For some reason he looks to me like he isn’t up for a relegation scrap, whether that is something to do with Gowling or is more deep seated I would not know. I would love him to prove me wrong, and if he does I will be happy to acknowledge my mistake, but certainly time he proved his point on the field and shut up his detractors with some spirited performances.

Re: Darlo v Chester
I said exactly that to my mate after the first few games he played, I didn't know if it was down to him not having a proper pre season rest or he had started to feel our level of football was below him. Neither idea seemed right given how long it went on for.
To be honest this season for most of the games I thought he looked slow and off the pace, didn't chase or hassle defenders which he was good at, and looked half hearted at times, saying that besides this Saturday, imo in the previous couple of games he looked a changed player, did run his heart out and put pressure on the defenders which helped the midfield.
Must admit on Sat he looked of the pace again and I thought when he came on he looked like he was having a few words with JG, (although I was at the other side of the pitch so could be wrong). Regarding the pass to Hatfield on Sat, at the time I thought it was really poor and he should have gone himself, but in the light of day given the stick he is having it may be in the back of his mind he will get slaughtered if he misses and took the easy option but just didn't get the pass right.
All this talk of him leaving, it could be that he is one of our few saleable players if JG wants to wheel and deal a bit?
