I remember learning about that in primary school, although I was never sure if the story about it being discovered by a blind man was true. I always suspected it wasn't.BishopQuaker wrote: I can tell you that the horse he'd riding doesn't have a tongue.

No, not in the manner being suggested.darlogav wrote:I rarely post but thought this deserved commenting on.
The 'PC gone mad' brigade is out misusing the terminology once again.
In danger of repeating what 90% of posters have said here, it's a celebration of openess and advancement in an era that showed a lot of intolerance to people because of the colour of their skin. It's about human beings giving human beings a chance due to their merit rather than their skin tone. I ask the ones against the statue...is this not worth celebrating???
I bet they did know when it was being put up - not 120 years later.darlogav wrote:As for the "most people have never heard of him, so why have a statue"...that is the single most bollox argument I have ever heard.
I bet many people can't tell you the name of the guy in front of Middlesbrough library or in the center of Durham Market Place. Statues stand to educate people as well as celebrate.
As I said, if it's to go anywhere, it should be at the club (old or new), certainly not High Row. You (and others) are going on as if there was some 'remember where you were' enlightenment of the town. He was at the club for less than a year.
It stinks of "Do you know what? DFC has a s*** history, let's try and build up some recognition by suggesting the town was before its time as a beacon of tolerance and enlightenment".

Interesting - I now see that Shaun Campbell is mixed-race. That explains a thing or two.

Shaun is truly a top bloke; he gave me a signed poster of Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown when he met them. I like his shop "Drum" as well.

This is about a footballer. The FA, as is evident by its name, deals with football matters. Should I be surprised at their involvement?Magical Quakers wrote:Seriously...? Henry Wharton was mixed-race. Shaun Cambell is mixed-race. Should I be surprised at his involvement?

I still don't see why you care....
You don't think there should be a statue, that's fair enough and is your opinion, so just don't go and see it - wherever it ends up.
Those of us who see a reason for it and think it is important will go and see it, wherever it is.
I just can't see why you keep going on about it.

It was nothing like the Bus Incident - as far as I'm aware Arthur Wharton wasn't breaking any laws/rules when we was playing for Darlington.
If this is the case, and you appreciate that blacks have been oppressed by whites in the past, then why such an objection to a single statue being place in ONE area of Britain. It's not as if it's headline news and the statue is being placed in the middle of Times Square, New York.
Once again I find it interesting that any one with different opinion is vilified, by the very people who profess tolerance. I have been called a bigot, an ignorant F8cker and now a "spouting bullshitters who is totally ignorant of anything past 1990". This is by the self righteous who have set them selves up as an authority on how the general public must think.
Whilst I dont claim to have read the full Arthur Wharton story, Its my historical knowledge that Im relying on to put the Wharton story in contexts and that is why I think he is not deserving of statue status.
Its quite ironic that that the very people shouting loudest about history are the ones showing the least historical context.
Re: Former Darlington goalkeeper to be honoured
This thread should be linked to the "general malaise" sticky at the top of the page.
Darlington remains a nothing town with nothing much to shout about (cue a defence about how we were kind of within 20 miles of the first railway). Thanks to the hard work of one or two people we get a shot of something positive, and there's still a couple (er, two to be precise) who complain about it.
Deep down can either of you really feel just a tiny bit of pride or feel good about this story?

This is a good news story for Darlington. Be happy.
Re: Former Darlington goalkeeper to be honoured
Whys that then am I not conforming to the thought police view.
Lets see what the good folk of Darlington think of the statue, Im sure it will be placed in the town but whether the general public embrace it, well I remain to be convinced.

What's visiting got to do with it? You keep talking about visiting statues. Is it a common past-time from where you're from then? Regularly visiting the same statues? Is that what people who buy season tickets for the Arena do.Magical Quakers wrote:Hmmm I think you've got the wrong person.Thank you for your input and for showing yourself as a bigot.
