Aussies 23/5 after 6 or so overs, so they are lucky yet again

England can only play the team that is in front of them, obviously the Aussies haven't turned up today.

Do you stand by your original assertion that England are rubbish, aren't in the same league as Australia and should give up international cricket?

Seriously, do you actually believe the stuff that pops up in your mind enough to type it down? For once admit you are completely wrong and England have a decent team

It's like if we beat the bottom side in our division 10-0, it doesn't automatically mean we are a great side. The aussies are clearly pants at the moment and would struggle to beat Darlington RA on their current form.

Yet if England have a bad day we should give up on international cricket?

I similarly don't really watch cricket but today all I could think of was darlo_petes post.

All being good, today we should wrap up the series.

Got to admit I, along with the vast majority England supporters, didn't expect a series win. And certainly not in such an emphatic fashion.

There are still some issues. Our batting (minus Joe Root) is too brittle, we're short of a quality spinner and I worry about the strength in depth, particularly in the bowling department.

But Trevor Bayliss seems to have instilled confidence and positivity since coming in.

It's certainly a much better situation than we were in after the World Cup.

Agreed on those points, just great to see us regain the Ashes.

Hopefully Stokes & wood can develop more and be the mainstay with Broard for a few years.

The spinner is more concerning short term

This is better! Proper cricket fans chatting, those who know what they are on about.

I can't disagree with you on any of the points.
On the batting situation, I agree but the New England approach is always going to cause problems every now and again. I think we've got it about right tbh.
The spinner is a big problem, we need to get some International game time into Rashid. Prehaps if we win this test we can't put him in for the final test.
On the bowling, we've still got Jimmy to come back in! Footitt is decent but maybe not quick enough.

I agree about Rashid. I'd like to see him get a chance at the Oval. The only danger with that is a refreshed Australia with nothing to lose decide to go after the new guy. Exactly that happened to Simon Kerrigan in the last series.

But we do need a quality spinner, otherwise we'll struggle, particularly away from home where the flatter pitches don't offer as much to fast bowlers.

With the batting, no Englishman, other than Root, has scored a century this series. They all need to step up, particularly the top 3. I hope we stick with Lyth too. We've gone through too many openers since Strauss retired. Repeatedly chopping and changing is no good.

Well there we have it!

The rubbish England cricket team (who should give up) get a flukey Ashes win over the Aussies!

Come on New England, let's make it 4-1.
Grind them Aussies into the dirt.

Yes but over the whole summer we've done very well. It's a young side with plenty of talent, but a lack of consistency. The challenge for the team going forwards, in all formats, is eradicating those days where everything goes wrong.

I normally think you get a hard time on here Pete, but you are being a right plum on this

All things considered, it's been a positive summer for England.

Wins in the Ashes series and the ODI series v New Zealand, as well as the test series draw v the Kiwis is much better than most would have thought possible at the start of the summer.

Even a 3-2 ODI series defeat to world champions Australia isn't a disgrace.

On top of that, there've been steps towards a much more positive way of playing cricket, with more aggression, particularly against New Zealand.

There's still fragility in the batting and the side needs to become more consistent.

But given the position of English cricket after the World Cup six months ago, it's in a much brighter position and the summer on the whole can be regarded as a successful one.
