1 - 3 Columbia: To nippy for our centre backs to cope with (PS Add at least another for them if Phil Jones gets on the pitch)

Re: The world cup
We are due a John Stones howler at some point. Tonight?
Re: The world cup
Thought we dominated the 90 overall but as usual bottled the finsih. Walker tried to fuck it and Tripper should've stopped their goal on the line. He got worse as the game went on unfortunately.
Still not convinced about Sterling and Alli. I don't think either holds the ball well enough. Rashford and Loftus-Cheek for me.
And Vardy - what a fucking bottler. He takes penalties for Leicester every other week yet doesn't step up for the five tonight. Huge let down. Dier got lucky with a weak penalty and would've been crucified had he missed (as would Henderson, who had a good penalty saved). Really disappointed.

Re: The world cup
Agree with Walker and Trippier assessment. Trippier seemed to struggle to get into their half which is where he does his damage.
I see what you say about Alli and Sterling. I think Alli is struggling with injury still so if he hasn’t recovered it makes sense to play Loftus-Cheek. Sterling is more of a dilemma, I think he is a better player and more dangerous than Rashford but clearly unless he starts playing to what he can then maybe we would be better switching. I am probably thinking Southgate will stick for the Sweden game he does seem to be loyal to players in the hope that eventually it pays off.
Thought Maguire and Kane were brilliant by the way. Kane is clearly our focal point there was a moment yesterday when pressure was on a long ball up to him he not only managed to control it but get a free kick in the opponents half. Was just superb forward play.
I thought we played the game well last night until the death. Yes we only scored from a penalty but we didn’t need to do anything else as we were in control. My first incline watching it was Lingard and Henderson looked a bit sluggish before the first shot came in which lead to the corner - on review I may have been a bit unfair the shot came from nowhere really.

Re: The world cup
Also on the pens. I am lead to believe Southgate didn’t put it down to ‘choice’ he has assessed who his penalty takers would be based on psychological assessment etc. etc. It may be less that Vardy bottled it and more that Dier was simply ahead in the penalty taking stakes at such a crucial moment.

Wow I was wrong with my prediction. I was texting Darlo_Swede during last nights match and he was rooting for us. Great that we've finally broken the curse of never winning a penalty shootout in a knockout stage of a competitive tournament.

Re: The world cup
In fairness, Vardy was one of six spoken to by Southgate, so would have taken the sixth had it come to that. Whether he should have taken one of the original - I'm not getting into that. We won the shootout, let's just be happy at that.Spyman wrote:

The thing that does annoy about Vardy is how massively overrated he is at international level. Last night when he came on, he did nothing. Obviously he relies a lot on pace, but when you're up against a tight defence such as Colombia's, which didn't allow anything in round the back, it neutralises Vardy completely. That happens way more at international level than club level.
For Leicester, he benefits because the defences aren't as tight, and he gets teammates like Mahrez running at defenders at speed. That happens less at international level because there's not as much space, so it's easy to mark Vardy out of the game.
But because he has pace and is viewed as "a bit of a lad", some fans idolise him. One caller on 606 said Vardy was a better striker than Kane which is sheer nonsense.
Re: The world cup
I've been informed that Vardy picked up an injury in extra time so didn't take a penalty for that reason. Fair enough if that's the case.
But yes agree generally - I've not seen him do a lot for England and he's not in Kane's class. I prefer Rashford as a direct forward as he seems more willing to run at people rather than just in behind. Wellbek too for that matter although he's probably more wasteful than Vardy - his all round play is better.
I thought Sterling had his best game of the tournament last night there just hasn't been much/any end product yet and there were times last night it looked like he could get a shot away and perhaps due to lack of confidence didn't try.
On to the next game and I don't fear Sweden as much as Columbia - they look pretty toothless up front and generally seem to lack any kind of star quality whereas previous Swedish teams have always had someone - Brolin, Dahlin, Larrson, Ibrahimovich - nobody in this team worries me like Falcao (admittedly not the player he was) or Rodrigues (had he played).

Re: The world cup
Agree. Even without those two names the likes of Cuadrado and Quintero were the type of threat who England don't deal with particularly well, at the other end of the pitch I believe that Mina / Sanchez were better equipped to deal with the threat from Sterling / Kane than Granqvist / Lindelof are.Spyman wrote:On to the next game and I don't fear Sweden as much as Columbia - they look pretty toothless up front and generally seem to lack any kind of star quality whereas previous Swedish teams have always had someone - Brolin, Dahlin, Larrson, Ibrahimovich - nobody in this team worries me like Falcao (admittedly not the player he was) or Rodrigues (had he played).
We should win it ultimately, and at this stage I will be disappointed if we don't but any level of confidence feels like tempting fate!

We beat Spain on Penalties at Euro 96, before obviously getting beat off the Germans.Darlo_Pete wrote:Wow I was wrong with my prediction. The Shootout win against Spain was where Stuart Pearce took one and made up for 1990

Trust me, Pete knows that. You can tell from the way he's written it - too convoluted even by his standards.

Re: The world cup
Well last night was a big disappointment, thought we were excellent up to half-time and then we were pretty poor after that. Still can't believe we lost. Not bothered about who wins, but reckon France will probably be too strong and fresher than Croatia.

First half we were good, and just let our foot off the pedal in the 2nd Half, thought Pickford had a decent game yet again.Darlo_Pete wrote:Well last night was a big disappointment, thought we were excellent up to half-time and then we were pretty poor after that. I think France will win it now and hopefully we can salvage something out of it and beat Belgium on Saturday.
I have a new found respect for Gareth Southgate, I laughed at his appointment, but he has done exceptionally well, I dont think Big Sam would have led us to the Semi Final.
Hopefully we will qualify for the Pan-European Euro 2020 Tournament, and win it at home, as the final stages of Euro 2020 will be played at Wembley Stadium

I agree with you about Southgate. I was very disappointed with his appointment, I'm pleased to say he has proved me wrong. I don't think the 3rd place playoff really matters.murtonquaker wrote:First half we were good, and just let our foot off the pedal in the 2nd Half, thought Pickford had a decent game yet again.Darlo_Pete wrote:Well last night was a big disappointment, thought we were excellent up to half-time and then we were pretty poor after that. Eric the half bee dire ..is he really a football player ? harlequins are recruiting, hes really really bad...we need a brand new team. southgate wont last another year, he hasn't got a clue about midfield players ,,deli ali has been the worst player iv seen in the world cup , rick christen wright rogber... wasn't any better today replacing the lanky lazy spurs iv no clue what he does , or did. we didn't press forward and attack, we pass sideways (dire) up and down , (henderson) and do nothing with the fooking ball...and has kane really got the golden boot ? well if he has, well done .
