Most pointless Degree courses...

Post by ShrewsX » Tue Dec 14, 2010 4:11 pm

In the light of the Student protest at tuition increases, I challenge the good people of this site to find the post pointless courses that you can do at University.

"Horology" (or "understanding of Historic Timepieces") at Birmingham City University

Was what I found after a very very brief search. Anyone doing that course should be made to pay fees!

University of Salford offers
"Museum and Heritage Exhibition design"

Anyone think that the country would suffer greatly if we had a few less people funded to do this course?

No University has ever offered a degree in David Beckham studies.

It was a module in Football culture or something of a similar title, which had some content relating to Beckham.

the one you are referring to - http://newscdn.bbc.net.uk/1/hi/education/694451.stm

but there was also a david & victoria module.

edit - it was actually a pure victoria beckham module at stafford named 'The Life and Works of Victoria Beckham'

One of my third year Sports Journalism (some would argue pointless in itself, and at times I'd be inclined to agree) modules was called 'The Sporting Image'.

The assessment entailed creating a piece of art, be it a drawing, painting, whatever, depicting a sporting issue. Marks awarded for the quality of the piece, use of artistic techniques such as abstraction, etc. and a 1000 word report detailing the theory behind it. So basically, the fact I can't draw/don't have a clue about art will most likely fuck my Journalism degree over in the long run! Pretty incredible, really.

Nah, more like coursework. Could easily, and probably should have, got someone to do it for me.

Why not have a word with Shaun Campbell and his Arthur Wharton thing? See if you could pinch an idea or two!

Pretty good shout that Robbo. Already done it unfortunately. Ended up drawing a pair of footie boots in a rubbish bin, representing the decline in men's football participation

The Harry Potter module does (on the face of it) sound odd, but having read the module description (below), I can see how it would be relevant to that particular course. It is, after all, a huge worldwide phenomenon and probably the most popular children's book series of modern times - surely it makes sense to study this in the context of an Education degree?

If it were part of an English Literature degree course, that would of course be stretching it a little.

Add to that the "unusual" teaching techniques used in that school
