This is vaguely related because the topic of Gavin Worboys and Portugese players has come up... Does anyone remember in the first few months of that 95/96 season that an offer came in from a club in Portugal for Worboys? I think it was through one of Hodgy's contacts and they offered him a deal but he turned it down to fight for his place. I'm sure it was in the programme, all seemed really weird that out of all our players a Portugese club would try and sign big Gav!

Anyway, back on topic... if I'm honest I was a bit dissapointed by Maddo in his playing spell with us.

But Rui Neves isn't a big signing, who had heard of him before he came here? It's not as if he was some Portuguese international or something.

But in Hodgy we had faith, and we were taken in with the influx of foreign flair at the time. Pedro, Jose, Franz and Mario

I think the hype came with him cause he'd once been on the books of Porto or something.
People obvioulsy forgot that George Switzer was on the books on Man Utd!

I'll add Nick Pickering to the list.

Haha Archie Stevens ! what a blast from the past, didnt he get a few goals for us ?

Dave Shearer - played at a higher level, came to us and is easily one of the top 3 worst ever Darlo forwards - had the turning circle of Tortoise...

I wouldn't class many of them as 'big signings'. I thought Kubicki did ok in the couple of games he played, and Stuart Elliott dropped off after a promising start. Kendrick was ok when played as a traditional left-back, rather than a wing-back.

The rest, pretty ropey or in Stamp's case, just never fit.

Most, if not all played at a higher level though and came with a certain weight of expectation that was never fulfilled.

Tom Kaak (according to Reynolds he was far better than Gabbiadini)

Graham Kavanagh (on loan - I was not impressed with him at all)

Kevin Kyle (looked like he thought he was doing us a favour, although his goal v Mansfield was a cracker)

Bernie Slaven - agree with earlier posts

I can't work this out.

Is Bernie Slaven not littered on every post on this thread because he was not a "Big" name or because it's just taken as read that he was a money grabbing lazy little shite, who is a legend in his own mind, played for Ireland even though he's scotch and generally gets on everyones tits?

Graham Kavanagh is a bit harsh - i thought he was decent for us in a poor side.

I thought Kavanagh was a lazy git with a bad attitude who clearly didn't want to be with us.

I take it you're just listing big signings in general rather than just big signings who were good.
Our front two in that line-up are shocking.

I'm listing supposed big signings (open for interpretation) that were shite, as per the OP. I'm very surprised you think only the front two are shocking.
Was just reading the "big signings" thread and felt inspired to start a post to discuss some once big name players who Darlo signed and at the time everyone thought they'd do an epic job, and they turned out to be a bit crap.

It's a fair point, but those two just stood out massively!

How has no-one mentioned Lee Nogan? Came under Reynolds and everyone creamed their keks cos he had a Wales cap but what utter sh*te he was. I honestly don't remember him doing anything, ever, and yet I must have seen at least 30 odd times.

My greatest (and I don't mean that as in best, I mean most vivid) memory of Nogan, was us defending a corner in front of the Tin Shed. The ball has played in, maybe a header, and was on its way out for a goal kick. Nogan, just wide of the post, kept the ball in play, knocking it into the 6 yard box, for their striker to put in the back of the net.

To be fair, he wasn't a bad player, but wasn't as good as the hype and never managed to dislodge Duffield as Gabbiadini's main partner.

Johnson was o.k. i thought, never set the league alight but was a steady winger for a couple of seasons in a decent side. Agree with the rest of your side though.

I always remember his performance away at Bolton in the League Cup., I think he scored 2 in a 5-3 defeat and had them all over the place.

Such a good performance from him early in the season was misleading to say the least.
