Best ever Darlo XI?

Post by STEVO » Mon Apr 16, 2012 12:28 pm

Here a topic Ive never seen mentioned on here..what the best ever Darlo dream team? Ive followed Darlo since 1996 so can only go back that far.

Assuming a 4-4-2 my favourite would be: (I think my centre mid would get a tad aggressive)!

Collett
Liddle
Crosby
DeVos
Heckingbottom
Heaney
Gray
Ravenhill
Bergmeier/Oliver
Blake
Gabbiadini

My Darlo-supporting history also only stretches back to 96-97, so limited, but:

Collett

Austin Liddle De Vos Heckingbottam

Purdie Gray Kennedy Heaney

Abbott Gabbiadini

It's been mentioned loads of times over the years (plus a worst 11) and people never get tired of it...

In a 4-3-3 and 5 subs

Barber

McJannett
Foster
Martis
F Gray

Gregan (though was cb for us)
Toman
Kennedy

Abbott
Gabbiadini
Currie

Subs - Stockdale, Liddle, Willis, Burgmeier, Airey

Couple of points - I find it hard to think of many good central midfielders or left backs over the years, but we've had more quality goalkeepers than I've had hot dinners - I only put Stockdale on the bench cos he's been in the England squad! Otherwise it could have been Prudhoe, Pollitt, Collett, Russell, Preece or a few others. Even the likes of Grainger were decent.

Decent, very decent, including the manager, and a few similarities to mine. Could have also had Speedie from the Walsh era.

I was going to put David Currie in but him and Gabbas are to much alike Speedie was class but I was looking for a balanced but very strong spine. Wouldn't it have been good to see how these might have played together, mouth watering indeed. Also unlucky to miss out was Pollit and big Jason De Vos.

Do we have to have owned the player.

Our list of quality loan players is pretty good, surely there is no keeper in Darlington's history with as good a record clean sheet per game ratio as Kasper Schmeichel!?

If we are allowed loan signings then in recent years Wheater, Bates and Schmeichel are surely in the mix!?

Why don't we include players who have never played for Darlo as well, but have been in the town? I once saw Paul Ince get out of a car opposite the pictures, ramble, ramble...

My mate once told Julian Dicks to his face in Humphreys that he was s*** and thats why Liverpool let him go back to West Ham. He also told Ian Dowie in the same conversation that he truly couldn't believe that photographs of him hadn't been altered!

Do those two count for being included as they spent time around the town?

And Gazza who drew a pair of tits on a bit of scrap paper for my girlfriends mate - also in Humphries.

That could be a whole different thread.

Lonerghan

Caldwell
Wheater
Bates
Bernard

Butler
MBW (was initially on loan)
Kennedy (as above)
Foran

Clarke
Hatch

I'm sure there are many more that I've forgotten but that looks a decent side.

I agree with Quakerz - over the years we've really struggled for central midfielders who really bossed a game. Even back in 2000 when we had Grey, it was either Atkinson or Oliver partnering him and neither were great. Cummins never lived up to the hype (although wasn't terrible), Keltie was always hit and miss, Stephen Oneweekaway never showed us what he could do, and how Jonjo Dickman played 30+ games in one season remains a mystery.

Another one of my mates spent 15 minutes gawping at Les McJannet in there as well. When he came over all my mate could do was just keep repeating Les McJannet!

Maybe this thread should be renamed famous footballers and those who have played for Darlo seen in Humphrys

Les McJannett was an awesome right back, right wing back. He hit his absolute peak years in those two promotion years at Darlo.

the one centre midfielder who I always thought was completely under rated was Adrian Webster. I think I saw that he has been involved in on the field scraps with team mates on his return down under. Not a game controlling centre midfielder mind, I might be wrong here but did he not play alongside Jonjo Dickman though - that might be why I thought he looked good!

It's the right backs I find difficult, Austin was a stand out for me over recent years and he's about all I can even remember outside of Phil Brumwell, Paul Arnison, Gary Himsworth (occasionall) and I am pretty sure we had a guy called Kubicska (or something) on loan from either Sunderland/Wolves!

Webster was highly rated by Mark Proctor, however he was injured a lot!

I know he was cos Mark Proctor told me in the lift at a match.

Yeah, it was just after I'd had a conversation with Simon Johnson after a match.

Proctor told me in the lift at the ground that he really rated Webster but unfortunately Webster was very injury prone.

Are you sure that Proctor didn't just try and avoid the question and defer to Hodgy?

Hodgy must have already given him permission to make a comment on Webster, just in case anybody asked.

Webster was alright, but we never had a settled pairing in midfield at that time. Webster, Oneweekaway, Dickman, Gregorio, Stamp, Appleby, and somebody called Nathan who may never have actually played a game for us.

We had so many central midfielders around that time, and none of them stood out as being much good.

The right-back you are after was Darius Kubicki. He played for Sunderland and Wolves, and I think he was Polish. He was with us about a month in the 97/98 season from memory.

Also, was Brian Close not around at the same time as that bunch. The thing I always remember about Brian Close, apart from the obvious, was the constant use of the phrase "thread through the eye of the needle passing" and that at the start of the season he was apparantely the player in our squad with the fastest acceleration.

the passing I don't think I ever saw evidence of and the acceleration I can only assume that the measurement was taken after about 1 metre and it just happened that Close had done a standing start and his belly was reaching out that far from the start line!
