An embarrassing defeat today, but let's have some context...
Maybe we don't want to be pressing the alarm buttons just yet, and be talking about replacing defenders that cannot defend and strikers that miss too many chances? It's only one poor game, out of twenty two. These are Northern League players (no disrespect), and if we replace anybody they will be replaced with Northern League players. These players currently at the club have done us all proud, even the bit part players. They can all hold their heads high, and know they played their part in the start of a resurgence of a great club. They've all deserved to wear the shirt.
After all, we were built from scratch, nobody gave us a hope in hell in getting straight out of this league, but we are still 19-0-3 with 70 goals scored. After the pre season mass attempt to brainwash us into expecting mediocrity by our silly friends in this league, I wasn't expecting this good of a start. I was expecting to lose to teams like Team North more regularly than we have done.
Let's be honest, a couple of blips and Spennymoor aside, we're smashing this league when even the most optimistic of us only dared hope to hang onto the coat tails of the top 4 or 5 and maybe have a push at improving things as the season progressed. And why was that? Because there are teams out there that are not only established but that have bigger spending power than us, and some others that can match us!
We've overachieved, we've surprised everybody, we've cleverly improved the squad with quality players as they have became available. I'm sure we'll continue to do so, though big changes are not needed. Many people who never took us seriously now have no option but to take us seriously, and boy do they not like it. They wanted us to come down and be good little boys, do as we were told and roll over. A lot of jealousy and bitterness has stemmed from us not conforming to that expectation, and along with it comes rumours of stupid budgets, illegal approaches, and everything is scrutinised with a view to hopefully "getting us" on something. With all of this, our expectations have skyrocketed in response, but let us not forget where we were 5-6 months ago - nowhere, and not knowing how this season was going to go if we were honest.
We cannot expect to walk the league, Spenny are big favourites for a reason, their record is incredible - yeah I know, just our luck. But it is what it is. Imagine if we win our next 3 or 4 matches? Imagine if we beat Spennymoor? It's all still to play for ladies and gentlemen, and I'm just glad that we're still in there fighting.
If you'd have said to me in August "you will lose your 22nd game of the season 2-0, and it will only be your third defeat, and you will have won the other NINETEEN matches" I would have begged you to make it true. Context!

Well said that man!
Lots of rubbish is spouted on this site but Quakerz has summed up Darlo's situation perfectly.

Absolutely right. 57 points out of 66 from a set of lads who seem decent and proud to wear the shirt. They've done brilliantly.

19 from 22 for a squad completely rebuilt in the summer is impressive. Four wins out of the next four will do us the power of good.

yep, got to agree, the lads have done us proud
Re: An embarrassing defeat today, but let's have some contex
Exactly, although when you lose away at Team North it does raise question marks at the back of your mind that it could happen again at Aycliffe and Durham...
But you've just got to dust yourself down, look at the overall picture and think hey it's gone great so far.

Just saw a good line on twitter
"26,23,29 = Points dropped by Spennymoor in last 3 NL championships. Almost halfway for darlo , we've dropped 9"

What ever happens we have a team to support and that team is challenging at the top currently. We are pissed off because we have lost today and rightly so, but we go again on Friday night and I will be there.

Great to find this thread - strikes exactly the right note. The team have been immense this season so far. Fans too - especially those that are running the club.

Re: An embarrassing defeat today, but let's have some contex
I’d agree that the performances so far this season has far, far, surpassed my expectations but past results shouldn’t be an excuse for the "performance" today which surely everyone in the region must agree was a massive upset and tbh embarrassing.
Now is not the time to cry
Now’s the time to find out why
I think you’re the same as me
We’ll see things they’ll never see
Darlo’s going to live forever!

Not embarrassing for a NL Team to lose to another NL Team.

Re: An embarrassing defeat today, but let's have some contex
If we had taken just one of our chances by either design or luck then I expect we would have gone on to win the game. More clinical finishing and we are good to go. As a side note, what happened to that young lad on loan from Newcastle? Hooper was it? Was he only brought in to play against Spenny in the cup?
COME ON DARLO!

Eh? Thats like saying it wouldn't of been embarrassing for (s*** example) man utd to lose at home to qpr yesterday.HarryCharltonsCat wrote:Not embarrassing for a NL Team to lose to another NL Team.

It was a shock result but hardly embarrassing.
They're in the same division as us, it's not like we got done by the Hurworth under-12 Girls team

But it wouldn't have been embarrassing, would it. United lost to Norwich last week - it was a surprise, but not an embarrassment.Big Tim wrote:Eh? Thats like saying it wouldn't of been embarrassing for (s*** example) man utd to lose at home to qpr yesterday.
Any team can beat any other team in the same league - that's why they're in the same league.
Spenny lost to Sunderland RCA, we lost to Team Northumbria. It happens.
And great post, Q, by the way.

Spenny drew with RCA and are still unbeaten after 19 games in the league

Great post Quakerz and, like I said after the Guisborough loss, how we respond to this "blip" is important. Go on another winning run and a "blip" is all this result will ever be.
I still have nightmares about that day. The horror!Jazz Maverick wrote:They're in the same division as us, it's not like we got done by the Hurworth under-12 Girls team

Northernlad was pointing out the error made by Beatroute66.
Is correcting somebody now considered trolling?

I got the point because I know how the NL works. Sometimes teams can surprise you, especially if you aren't on your game.

It is the same in any league that sometimes teams can surprise you. You don't need to "know how the NL works" to make a statement like that.northernlad73 wrote:I got the point because I know how the NL works. Sometimes teams can surprise you, especially if you aren't on your game.
If anything, the NL, while still containing shocks, is a lot MORE predictable than higher leagues.
