Who was our best goalkeeper?
There are some people who are masters of their trade; such people, whether the finest of doctors, the best of mechanics, or whatever, just exude an aura of competence. Those old enough to remember Gordon Banks might recall that feeling of confidence he inspired between the posts for England, you knew he was a real professional; the best. Some who are older than me might nominate Ray Wilson- he must have been good to have gone to Manchester United. But the one that shades it for me is Tony Moor. He had that aura, that competence, that persona or whatever it is that inspires that confidence in a supporter, that reassurance that one seeks. Why Moor? Well you could tell right from the moment he made his way to the goal, from that trademark limbering up warm up routine, that here was an athlete that meant business. He didn't punch or parry, he actually caught the ball, whether from corners or at full stretch. His goal kicks went down the other end and never in to the sides of the ground, and he was tough. And here's the thing; so many certain goals, so many sickening heart stopping moments were nipped in the last microsecond by the sight of the horizontal Moor, flying through mid air across goal with outstetched arms to make a catch.
For those to young to have been inspired as I was, Moor played from the mid sixties up till 1971. Some, at the time, claimed he was good enough to play for England. So who would your nomination be?

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
i like Fred Barber
Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
In my era it was Collett, incredible consistency during his stint.
I have lasting feeling that David Preece and Tepi Moilanen were absolutely awesome, but at the time I was really quite young so probably didn't really understand a great deal!

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Very difficult, from those I've seen Prudhoe, Pollitt & Collett have been the best, i'd struggle to pick the best between those 3.
Preece was okay but behind these 3 IMO and Hodgy played a blinder getting the money he did for him.
In terms of loan keepers, Molilanen was good, in fact all the Preston keepers were very good - Lonergan and especially Lucas who, along with Gerken was probably our best loanee.
Special mention for Nigel Batch, who sported a beard, smoked a pipe and wore a flat cap - they don't make them like that anymore.

Remember Nigel Batch lighting up straight after a game once.....legenddivas wrote:Very difficult, from those I've seen Prudhoe, Pollitt & Collett have been the best, i'd struggle to pick the best between those 3.

Fred Barber, Andy Collett, Mike Astbury in that order.

I was a ballboy in that fateful season when we got relegated to the conference and seen Batch have a pie before a game, he has had legendary status with me ever since.njb wrote:Remember Nigel Batch lighting up straight after a game once.....legenddivas wrote: Special mention for Nigel Batch, who sported a beard, smoked a pipe and wore a flat cap - they don't make them like that anymore.

I'd forgotten about Gerkin ..... brilliant goalkeeper.
David Preece was good too, very brave and he pulled off some remarkably spectacular saves, but not as reliable as Collett.

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
difficult to call between all of them, think we have always had good keepers even now with bell
Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
I remember a Darlo pools game at feethams years back. Finished 1-1 but Collett made about 5 world class saves that day. One from a Kevin Henderson overhead kick sticks in my mind in particular. Collett should have played at much higher level, we've always seemed to have been blessed with decent keepers at Darlo!

surprised no one has mentioned David Stockdale

Mark Prudhoe for me.
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Collett for me, the Banks-esque save against the Poolies was unbelievable.
Also a mention for Stockdale, especially his performance at Morecambe in the re-arranged match on a quagmire (after the first game had been abandoned).
David Knight first time round was quality too, for a midget. Before he came back as someone else and was shite.

I agree all good keepers, of those three maybe Prudhoe edging it for me but without a doubt Tony Moor was the outstanding keeper in my time watching Darlo.
Ray Wood as mentioned in the first post actually played for Darlo in 1949 ( 12 games ) before being transferred to Man Utd for a small fee. He played 3 times for England.

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Prudhoe for me... dodgy as hell in his 1st half season with us then outstanding for the next 4 seasons...even the 91-92 relegation season when we would have let in about 200 without pruds as our defence was that bad ...Corkys mega own goal a particular cock up that season
After that its between Collet & Preece

I'd forgotten all about the bearded one , quality keeper just a shame we had Prudhoe at the same time. Keith Granger was also with us about then as well i think he was decent till he was injured for 2 whole seasonsdivas wrote: Special mention for Nigel Batch, who sported a beard, smoked a pipe and wore a flat cap - they don't make them like that anymore.

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Never saw the bet of Prudoe. Collett was the man for me. However, it has to be Stockdale. He the only keeper we've had to go on and okay regularly at the highest level.
Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Collett for me. If he'd been a bit taller he'd have made it at a much higher level.
Gerken, Lonerghan stand out for me from loaners I've seen.
Preece was good but prone to the odd error from memory.
Frank Van den Geest was another that could've been great but was unlucky to be behind Collett in the pecking order. Always looked impressive when he got a game though.
Phil Stamp also deserves a mention.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Tony Moor followed by Jeff Wealands
Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Does no one else remember Billy Dunn who played as regular choice in the mid 1950's ? He may not have been the best but he was very sound in the cloth cap and green jersey era .

Closely followed by Alan Ogley (for England!)dfcdfcdfc wrote:Tony Moor followed by Jeff Wealands
To be honest I think we've had quite a few good keepers but I think most of them are more memorable because they were called into action far too often.
Got to be a keeper from one of our more successful line-ups - probably Mark Prudhoe from our back-to-back title winning days under Brian Little, or Andy Collett, for me.

Tony Moore, without a doubt.
We seem always to have had good keepers.
Local lads John Hope, Jeff Wealands amongst them

Re: Who was our best goalkeeer?
Preece was good shot stopper but terrible at corners/crosses. I remember sometimes having to look away when he came out for them due to the uncertainty!
Collett was top notch, Stockdale, Prudhoe, Paul Newell
