GREATEST EVER COMEBACK BY DARLINGTON?

Post by Rufusuk » Sat Feb 13, 2016 7:20 pm

Was this the best comeback ever by Darlington? So much better for team spirit than a battling 1-0 win.

I can remember the F A Cup match played at the Riverside (during the Feethams Flood era),against Burnley when (I think) we were 1-2 down with a couple of minutes to go, and won 3-2?

What other great comebacks have there been?

The greatest has to be the day we were declared dead, and rose like a phoenix from the ashes with the aid of a suitcase full of money. Or did you mean only ON the pitch?

Grimsby at home was pretty decent. 2-0 down step forward Pawel Abbott

In that Burnley game, Darlo were 2-0 down with over 80 minutes played.

Gateshead in the FA Trophy semi final has to be up there.

I have a memory of a 2 legged Freight Rover Trophy tie against Halifax in the 80s. We lost the first leg 4 - 1, so I didn't bother with the second leg. Which we won 7 nil.

Mark Sheeran's goals Vs. Luton to make it 3-2 from 1-2 stand out for me. Whatever happened to him anyway? He playing down in a regional league somewhere?

I seem to remember a great fightback at Feethams, with Matt Clarke getting a dramatic late winner, can't remember who we were playing though.

Pete, are you thinking of the 2-1 win against orient, our first win at the arena, when Clarke played up front? That was a very late turn around, but only from 1-0 down. Chris Hughes got the other.

Think Atkinson scored in that amazing Burnley win, maybe he can adjudicate.

Kidderminster comes to mind, Matt Clarke scoring 2 infront of the Tin Shed

Mark Barnard scored the winner. I remember the Echo headline "Barnard's Star" - but I never understood the relevance of the 'star' bit.

However, on Googling just now, it turns out to be a Red Dwarf type thing.

Did Atkinson play? I can only handle being so wrong.

And for what it's worth, i'd have gone with Barnard's Castle.

Home game against Swansea around about 98 sticks in the memory.

2-0 down well in to the second half, won 3-2 thanks to two late goals from Glenn Naylor. I remember that I hated Glenn Naylor at the time, but when I look back, he did seem to have a bit of a knack on his day (I'll never forget that hat-trick at Colchester..... just out of nowhere that was.... he was on fire that day)

The following season against Sheffield United was a bloody good effort as well, although we ultimately lost the tie. Naylor was sent off in the first half but in the second half we managed to get two goals (I can vividly remember De Vos' bullet header from a corner) to win 2-0 after 90 minutes to send it to extra time, but eventually Dean Saunders scored a couple and that was the end of it.

Also, wasn't there a derby match in that era where we completely turned it on its head late on? I remember we were absolutely hopeless for nearly all of it - completely outplayed - and then Hodgson made what looked like an utterly random decision to bring Richard Hope off the bench and put him up front, but it turned out to be inspired. I think we got two or three late goals to salvage a draw. Anyone remember that? I'm sure Richard Hope had something to do with it anyway.

I just thought of that - was it 2-2 at the Vic? Darren Roberts with one, maybe both very late on. Lots of "stuff" being chucked about on the way out.

But I'd have to say the late show against Burnley at the Riverside wins it for me - maybe I'd have thought differently if I'd been at Salford though.

This one - followed by either the Poolie game when we came from behind to draw late on having been awful (97/98?) or the FA trophy semi v gateshead

Ah yes, that's right, we were rained on with all sorts after that, including a wheelie bin! Not content with deciding to let the poolie fans out of the gate right next to the away fans with no kind of cordon, at exactly the same time (why they didn't keep us back at the end I'll never know), the police and stewards also somehow managed to allow a bloke to leave the ground but then return, wheeling a wheelie bin back through the gate, which he proceeded to launch over the fence at us!

Early 80s 0-2 down at home to Hartlepool. Dave Mclean started the
fightback with a goal at the tin shed end before 4 Alan Walsh goals
in the second half to win 5-2.
The win at Salford is right up there mind you!
