Friendlies...or lack of
Friendlies...or lack of
Looks like two teams have cancelled on us according to the Echo this morning. I wonder if these were the two high profile games?
As of now we have
2nd July Buxton (A)
5th July Harrogate RA (A)
12th July Billingham Synthonia (A)
22nd July Gateshead (A)
With most local clubs having pre season schedules already booked, I wonder who we are going to play. You'd think there's at least 3/4/5 dates left in there
6th August Season start

Normally we'd have 12 to 15 pre-season friendlies organised. Hopefully we'll get some sort of statement after this evenings meeting with the Rugby Club.quakersam wrote:Looks like two teams have cancelled on us according to the Echo this morning. I wonder if these were the two high profile games?

If the big teams have pulled out it's likely because we aren't able to use the Arena after all, don't you think? I wonder id Spenny will play us?
Come on Darlo!

The club made an announcement about the prospect of two upcoming friendlies against larger clubs, not me. I think it is appropriate to say if these two friendlies are going to take place or not.lo36789 wrote:You want a statement on the number of friendlies we have scheduled?Darlo_Pete wrote:Normally we'd have 12 to 15 pre-season friendlies organised. Re: Friendlies...or lack of
Heard a rumour that Quakers are talking to Mowden RUFC about staging 3 big team friendlies at the Arena. Mowden keen to generate more income hence may be amenable to groundshare - can anyone corroborate this?
Re: Friendlies...or lack of
That was going round towards the end of last season but nothing has come out of the club as of yet.
Re: Friendlies...or lack of
Not happening, all of our pre season friendlies will be 'away' games. HP - pitch not ready, Arena - pitch no good, and BM - no pitch at all!!!

Heard that we're supposed to be playing Sunderland at the Arena, it was originally going to be their first team, but now they say it will just be a Sunderland XI and we a wondering whether it will be worthwhile going ahead.

It'd have to be at a neutral venue if you did play us. The Brewery Field is having a lot of maintenance done to it over the summer so all of our friendlies are awayMikeinBlack2 wrote:If the big teams have pulled out it's likely because we aren't able to use the Arena after all, don't you think? Looks like were not going to get any much needed funds from friendlies this season. Fingers crossed we get some sort of cup run and not get knocked out at the first opportunity as per normal.

Totally agree. Going out the cup early gives us chance to focus on the leagues, but this year perhaps it is worth foregoing promotion so we can get some doshMikeinBlack2 wrote:Looks like were not going to get any much needed funds from friendlies this season. If only it was as simple as deciding you want a cup run.

Re: Friendlies...or lack of
Dont the kids have some friendlies arranged?
On seeing the two friendlies so far it seems best for Darlo to take an opportunity now to have an intensive training and familiarisation weekend.
At least 4 of our experienced first XI players seem to need such extra training.
There may be more 1st XI friendlies that get fitted in, but match fitness should be top priority, instead of leisurely knocking over lower league teams.

Re: Friendlies...or lack of
As this oldish thread has been bumped please rest assured that a lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes to stage these two high profile fundraising friendlies at the Northern Echo Arena.
Please show your support by attending these games and to welcome Darlington FC back to the town, and please help spread the word about these games by downloading and displaying this poster in your front window, local corner shop, etc.

Thanks mr T
Being an exile and combined with being on hols overseas I started to think the games had been cancelled.
Let's hope for a big turn out to help the club finances.
