American Football

Post by Darlo_Pete » Sun Sep 11, 2016 3:55 pm

Well the new season kicks off this weekend. Really enjoyed the new BBC programme Touchdown USA, that featured my team the Green Bay Packers. What a place, a town the size of Darlington, with a ground that holds almost 80000. The wait for a season ticket is in excess of 20 years. A new born fan was registered by his parents onto the season ticket waiting list, only just over 117,000 ahead of him!! One day I hope to get to Lambeau Field for a home game and then drive down to Florida the following weekend to watch them play an away game.

Pete, do you understand the rules of American football?

Yes pretty well, I don't know a few of the intricacies. Great win for the Packers, amazing how many fans made it to Jacksonville from Green Bay.

Spyman - why do you have a photo of George Galloway on your Facebook profile?

It was a good program and Green Bay are a team I always like to see do well but I suspect the number printed on the receipt for the season ticket waiting list isn't their position in the queue.

It will be, the clubs followers are fanatics and just about everybody has or is waiting for a season ticket. The problem is that is a season ticket holder passes away, it can be passed onto a family member, so the number of available season tickets each year is relatively small. They keep increasing the capacity of Lambeau Field and taking thousands off the waiting list, but that just seems to encourage more to join the waiting list.

I'm not doubting their fan base, I'm doubting that a receipt from registering for the waiting list will show your position in the queue. That's information that is only valid at the moment that the receipt is printed and could cause misunderstandings.
For example, you could register on a Monday and be given position 100,000 and I could register the next day and be given position 98,000 we could discuss this and you might (incorrectly) think I've jumped in front of you. So I suspect this will be a reference number.

To put it another way if a fan was to join our supporters group in a couple of years time and was given a membership number of 1000 it wouldn't necessarily mean there are 1000 members in the group as the unique number they have been provided with takes into account all who have joined the group and not those who have left (or in Green Bay's situation, been given a season ticket).

Surely it is a bit of an irrelevance the population of the town given the structure of NFL the size of a town where the stadium is actually built?

Recall when I was in the states we went to see the Detroit Tigers play but the support came from Kalamazoo.

Green Bay Packers get huge support from Milwaukee which is about 100 miles south and that city has a large metropolitan population over a couple of million and it doesn't have an NFL team.

I sure when the NFL first arrived on our screens back in the 80's , Green Bay use to play 3 home games a season in Milwaukee.....

Yes they did play at Milwaukee and I think it was 4 games that they played there each season.

Bloody hell what a game last night, as the Packers snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. I'm going to have to remember where I put that betting slip just in case.

That was embarrassing for Green Bay, as we get thumped by Atlanta in a very one sided game. At least I don't have to look for my betting slip!!

Not really considering the injuries we had to our defense, I think they did excellent to get to the NFC Championship final. Hope Atlanta stuff the Patriots, as I know a Patriot fan and he'll be intolerable if they win, plus Atlanta have never won the Superbowl.

Wow what a comeback, you have to hand it to Brady as the Patriots win again. I really feel for Atlanta.

People are saying after the Superbowl that Brady was the best QB ever. I disagree he doesn't seem to be able to scramble and he rarely runs, both of which the best QB's have to be able to do.

Sad to hear the news that American Football commentator legend Kevin Cadle has passed away at such a young age. RIP Kev and thanks for helping to raise the game of American Football to it's current high in Britain.

Congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles on winning the superbowl for the first time. Wonder if Brady will retire now?

Brady still has four fingers that do not have a super bowl ring so no chance.

The first year American football was on TV over here on channel 4, in 82. Final in Jan 83 I liked the Redskins colours and am also a fan of native indian history so I backed them. My wife went for the Dolphins simply because of the colours. so I did a nice patent bet on the 2 winning their conferences and the Skins winning super bowl. It paid a nice tidy profit.
Still not seen better than Joe Theismann and Dan Marino, to say nothing of John Riggins.
I still watch occasionally but don't like the presentation as much now

When American Football started on Channel 4, I started to follow the Cincinnati Bengals, mainly because of the Icky Woods shuffle, haha. I also followed the Green Bay Packers because it was a small place by American standards & they were useless in those days. Now I still follow the Packers & they are one of the best.

Well live sport at last, well kind of as I'm watching the NFL draft. It's all a bit weird though as all being done in self isolation from people's homes. I'll have to wait a few hours to see who my team the Packers will pick, as they are 30th out of 32 overall first round picks.

Well that was a shock as we move up to pick Jordan Love a very highly rated quarterback, a successor for Aaron Rodgers. I wasn't expecting that.
