Would like to see Wright be quite ruthless in the summer. The squad needs a bit of a refresh and with the budget we're going to have every £1 is going to matter. Move on about 4/5 players. Need to make sure we use the loan market well as we did for Talbot and Pears. Bring in a Keeper and a 2nd striker as priority. Dual register Harvey with a NL team so he can get game time when he's not in the matchday squad. And look out for like for like replacements should any of Wheatley, Trotman or Heaton earn a move following the V9 Academy. But I would resist the urge to spend that money in transfer fees. Enough good players are free agents in the summer we should really have to be spending precious resources on transfer fees.
There's potential in this squad but we have some fine tuning to do for next season.
We need some options for when it's not working, particularly going forwards. I'm happy to put the defensive display down to a one-off last night - it's easy to forget that the defence, Galbraith apart (who's hardly an experienced CB) are all pretty young. Midfield was often overrun last night too (another thing to tweak for next season perhaps).
However, going forwards we seem very hit or miss. If, in particular, Styche and Thompson are 'on it' we look very dangerous, if not, we seem to struggle. I know we actually scored twice last night, but I think the point still stands.
Still, I don't think we're far off - a few out and a couple of good signings in (and most of Wright's signings so far have been good) and we'll not be far off a playoff team next year I think. Particularly with our younger players continuing to learn and develop.
