Rumours on the grape vine that there’s been interest from Sunderland.

Wow that would be some move for the lad if it comes off. He has been fantastic since he joined us, but stepping up to league one would be a massive step. If he goes, then we'll have virtually no team left. But a transfer fee would hopefully be given to TW to strengthen the squad and bring in some urgently needed bodies.

The type of outgoing transfer which nobody would mind. I'd be surprised as, while I think he's got the ability to make it in the pro game, it's a fair jump to a team chasing promotion from L1. If it is true then its imperative that at least some of the money is used to improve our chances of avoiding relegation.

Trotman has been incredibly average this season. No final ball and weak in tackles. Was very poor at Chester. Started well last season when he first joined but has definitely gone backwards.

I suspect this rumour is rubbish, so I'll not get my hopes up. But if we get rid of him for money that would be amazing.

I'm not actually bothered about any of these players leaving. They've taken us into a relegation battle so they're not that good. I'm concerned more about who comes in. All quiet on that front so far.

From what I've seen lately it is more likely it is Sunderland RCA in the Northern League.

I think people are underplaying his importance to us. When the Trotman-Thompson double act is working well, it makes an enormous difference to our attacking potential.

I think he's a good player playing in a poor team.

I think he has great ability, but I see his ability going forward (not so much defensively). If some very good coach could work on him, he could become a very good player

Regardless of his form this season, he's probably someone with enough raw talent and the physical attributes to be developed with some proper coaching, he's young and would come relatively cheap - it's a low risk signing for a club like Sunderland but with the potential if he did develop to be a very sound investment - either through resale or a player who can go back up the leagues with them.

If we can get a decent fee for him and he moves to a club the size of Sunderland, albeit they're at a low ebb currently, it's another good advert for DFC as a club that gives young players a route into the professional game.

There's nothing wrong with anything said about Trotman. Any criticism in this thread is perfectly valid. I don't think Trotman has been very good this season, his ability is a tad overrated and him leaving would have very little impact on us. But I suspect it won't happen.

That's not sticking the boot, although I wish Trotman would do that a bit more.

I think some Darlo fans are way too sensitive to any criticism of players' ability.

Maybe.

Or maybe he's an average player, made to look better because he's in a poor team. That's how I would see it.

He's our only recognised right back, so there would be a clear impact, especially with our ability to bring in new players expected to be limited to unproven loan signings. This on top of a wafer thin squad, which doesn't appear to have anybody who could fill the role effectively.

Of course, any sale could provide funds to bring a player in but considering the manager's precarious position that could/should be used elsewhere.

He's inconsistent I will agree, but he has clear ability and has been excellent in several games this season. Certainly not the first player I would be highlighting as a let down this season.

I like Trotman. I think he can play at a higher level. I don't, however, think that he's a player that will interest Sunderland.... but, if they want to pay us good money for him....

I’m sure I read he was being scouted by Man U before a major injury a few years ago.
If it’s true can’t see club standing in his way.

Trotman featured in the V5 trials in the summer demonstrating he has potential. He is clearly one of our better players. I like watching him as he has a great footballing mind and good ability

For me he has improved considerably, and without doubt player of the season so far having gained his fitness after being hampered by injury last season.

Trots has been one of the few players who has tried to drive us forward and create something, especially at home. The only thing I would like to see him do when he drives into the box is get a shot off rather and play a pass.

Obviously if we sold him, the priority would be finding a new right back, and any leftover funds are available for other players in other positions. No reason why that wouldn't be the case in this hypothetical scenario. But like I say this is purely speculative and I don't think it'll happen.

Look, I've not said he's a bad player. Just that I don't rate his contribution this season. I've been to most games and haven't seen him be "excellent" at all. His crossing ability has been poor of late, and he constantly seems to lose the ball going forward, while offering not a great deal defensively.

There are definitely worse players than him this season, I agree. But this thread is about Trotman, and I don't think he's been as wonderful as everyone says. Beyond running up and down the right wing a lot, I don't really see what he's offered this season.

I agree that on occasion he is defensively vulnerable. I would also say that Alan White's repeated claims that he's the best right back in the league are rather inaccurate.

However, he still shows a lot of promise going forward in my opinion. I also feel he is hampered by the complete lack of any intelligent movement up top. Quite often he gets into good positions going forward and has no option. We are static and extremely predictable. I suppose his crossing can be up for debate but his only real target is Ainge who looks like he's been carrying an injury all season.

Regardless, there is definitely room for improvement but I think he's a good player, with potential to be better in a superior side with a superior manager.

Disagree. He consistently stands out every time I see him, and for me is our most reliable performer. He's clearly cut out to play at a level higher than this in the future (hence trials at Vardy academy), which is not to say he's necessarily at L1 level yet. His decision making is superb and he rarely gives the ball away, dribbles well and always offers an outlet. Work to be done on defensive side possibly.

His departure would be a blow if we didn't get someone in of a similar calibre to replace him and I'd be very surprised if we did.

My earlier comment was tongue in cheek.
Whilst I think he has the potential to play at a higher level, I think he is affected with the malaise which permeates the team at the moment. Lack of confidence, lack of leadership, lack of ideas, lack of direction from the management.

This.

Trotman has been our player of the season so far, and is one of the best attacking full-backs in the league.

We have been shocking this season but he has been one of very few bright sparks.

Not a chance is Trotman our player of the season! Trotman has offered us very little this season. He runs up and down a lot, that's about it. If you rate him as player of the season, it shows just how bad we've been under TW.

He was decent last season, no doubt about that. And he may well progress in the future. But I'm talking about the the current campaign and he's been nowhere near that level this time around. He's given the ball away too much in the final third, left us vulnerable at the back and has offered very little in terms of ball into the box.

Sue_Donym admits he needs work defensively which, considering Trotman is a defender, is quite telling.

Come to think of it, who would be our player of the season so far? Not Trotman obviously. Saunders? Wheatley? No one stands out at all.

Trotman does need work defensively, however he is also working under a manager that would rather win 5-4 than 1-0 so he won’t get that here.

In my opinion, he has been our player of the season. We would struggle to replace him, which is a big statement to make for someone that just “runs up and down a lot”.

I think full back has been our weakest area for most of the season. Trotman certainly has the attributes to succeed as a footballer but I’m not sure it’ll be at right back unless he gets some serious coaching in that position. He looks much better going forward or even as the right sided centre back in a 3

Unfounded Shropshire Rumour, designed to further unsettle the squad.
