What Size Ground?

Post by spen666 » Sun Apr 14, 2019 6:29 pm

The topic of Blackwell. n
Meadows, The Arena, the Sports Village etc understandably provokes lots of debate and views from fans.

FCUM have found the costs of building & running their new stadium to have affected their money available for a playing budget.

The Arena clearly had running & maintenance costs that were too high, for both the football club and now for DMPFC

So my question is this...if a lottery winner were to offer to build & give to the football club a new ground, but football club would have to pay all running costs maintenance etc:
1. What size ground should be built ( beating in mind future aspirations of club, is back I to EFL)
2. What additional facilities should ground have..eg clubhouse ( open match days / daily) conference facilities.

About 10,000 would do us. Feethams was around this and I believe York’s new stadium is about 8000.

There may be the odd match 3 or 4 times a decade where we could sell more seats but hardly worth the extra build|running costs.

Something like Burtons ground would be ideal.

In all seriousness, a ground of 5,000 would be ample for us - 8,000 absolutely tops. We never, ever, averaged anywhere near 8,000 even at the best of times.

In a utopian world, I’d love a small ground of our own with steep stands and good acoustics to create a super atmosphere in every game.

I think something like Aggborough (Kidderminster) would be perfect. https://www.footballgroundguide.com/lea ... adium.html

6,200 capacity. All covered. 3,100 seats.

Problem with the Arena was it wasn't big enough 30,000.
"At a meeting held at the Grammar School on Friday last - Mr Phillip Wood M.A., in the chair - it was resolved to form an Association Football Club for Darlington and neighbourhood. The opinions of those present were so unanimous as to the desirability of this step, that a committee was formed to complete the organisation of the club, and Mr Craven, 17, Garden Street, was appointed secretary pro tem." - The Northern Echo, Monday 23rd July 1883

One of the best grounds ive been to. Modern, compact, located next to a steam railway and there food was restraunt quality. Was gutted they got relegated

Whilst the ground hopping purists hate new builds the beauty of them and modern construction in general is things are designed and built with future expansion in mind. Theres a company called stadium solutions which can build grounds which utilise prefab construction and they could build a efl capacity ground around 5k would be adequate. Could easily expand it with off the shelf structures

An 8-10,000 ground for me.

That's small enough that we're not completely rattling around in it with 2-3,000 in it, small enough to have a good atmosphere and a couple of the stands reasonably full with 4-5,000 in it - yet large enough to accommodate a big cup match or promotion clincher (obviously all of this is league crowds not NLN crowds).

But I could definitely cope with having Nene Park as our ground - when Rushden played there it was 6.200 capacity, modern, good looking, 3 seated stands, terrace behind one goal, fully enclosed, one of my favourite grounds ever.

Colchester has a ground built from a plan used by alot of Lower league club over the last few years.
As the planning is already done its cost effective and quite quickly built. Now we only need the land and monies and away we go. Dreaming of course.???

Why steep stands if it is a relatively small ground? I can understand steep stands in v big grounds

I have never liked Colchester's new ground. It always strikes me as seeming soul less. I think it is partly because it's 4 similar but separate stands and all seater.

I used to like Nene Park, probably because it had terracing

Better view, everyone is closer to the pitch and, given the right acoustics, can yield a better atmosphere.

Steeper stands also make them a bit taller, which makes smaller grounds seem a little bit bigger and more imposing on occasions where the ground has a good % filled.

Ideal world. 6,000. Close to the pitch, relatively steep stands. Opportunity to expand if we really need to. We barely needed 10,000 in the football league.

I'd like to see a 6000 capacity ground, that could be developed if and when we get into the FL.

Glanford Park, the home of Scunthorpe, always struck me as an ideal ground for us albeit in need of repairs. The ground was fully covered with terracing behind one goal
