Second Time Around
Second Time Around
As often Darlington fans seem to be keen to speculate on the return of former players I thought that I would have a go at picking a team of players who have returned in the past.
Goalkeeper Sam Russell
Defenders. Kevan Smith Alan White Ryan Valentine
Midfield. Neil Wainwright Phil Brumwell Steve Gaughan. Mark Convery. Mitch Cook
Strikers. Lance Robson. Alun Armstrong
Subs. David Dowson David Ferguson. Liam Hatch Tommy Wright
Manager. Dave Hodgson
Can you think of any other players to strengthen the team?

Re: Second Time Around
Adam Reed, Matty Appleby, Darren Roberts and Glen Naylor I would have ahead of a couple mentioned.

Re: Second Time Around
I think we'd need to specify which 'version' of said players we would take!
For example, Adam Reed looked a world beater before diving off to Blackburn. When he returned to looked like he had spent the time between in ballet school.

Re: Second Time Around
This has reminded me of how few footballers generally have a successful return, except perhaps in the cases where brief loan spells have turned into a permanent arrangement.
Re: Second Time Around
Josh Heaton, anybody ?

- the original version
- what they became in between
- what they came back as
Re: Second Time Around
Yes I was thinking along similar lines. Sometimes if the first spell has been a successful one it can be a mistake to return and not live up to expectations.Maurice_Peddelty wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:43 pmThis has reminded me of how few footballers generally have a successful return, except perhaps in the cases where brief loan spells have turned into a permanent arrangement.

Gary brown surely warrants a place?

Re: Second Time Around
Big fan of Gary Brown but as far as I know he never played in the first team during his initial spell with the club. Have only included players who had separate spells and played in the first team in each of those. Have not included loanees either.

Second Time Around
Brown joined us in 2012, left for Shildon in 2015 and then came straight back after a couple of months. Was a regular in both spells.Old Git wrote:Big fan of Gary Brown but as far as I know he never played in the first team during his initial spell with the club. Adam Rundle and Sean Gregan (after his one appearance against Glasshoughton Welfare in pre-season back in 2012).
Re: Second Time Around
In this subject, who do we feel has actually been better second time round?
People always clammer for the return of old favourites but they rarely perform as well second time around.
I'd say Sam Russell was better second time around, and Gary Brown didn't let himself down either. Alan White also, considering age/level between his two spells. Dowson another but at a significantly lower level and didn't do much in his first spell so not quite the same.
Other than that, I can't really think of any from my time that have been as good/better on their return.

Quakerz - if you actually attended games and spoke to people you might actually find our facts, rather than spreading s*** on this board.

Dowson’s winning goal against Spennymoor in the play off semi final - what a fantastic memory

Also surely Craig Liddle deserves a mention as well!
Jamie Chandler would be the other one.
Maybe players who were on loan and then signed permanently don't count - that was Dowson right? He was on loan first time round?

I thought him and Chandler were on loan from Sunderland in the season we got relegated. I think there was a third loanee as well but can't remember their name.

Re: Second Time Around
Off the top of my head there's a few I can remember apologies if they've already been mentioned;
Phil Brumwell - spent a season at Hull before coming back to us in 2001/02 if I recall rightly.
Matt Clarke - returned briefly on loan from Bradford in 2006.
Guy Ndumbu-Nsungu - also came back to us also after a spell at Bradford in 2007/08.
Barry Conlon - Returned from Barnsley in 2006 and scored a hattrick on the opening day of the 06/07 season against Macclesfield but then seemed to do very little after that, I think he went to Mansfield after Dave Penney came in.
Craig Russell - Came back to us during the 2003/04 season originally had him on loan from Man City in 1999/00.
Danny Mellanby - Came back briefly at the beginning of the 2012/13 season retired from professional game in 2004 after a back injury.
Richie Foran - Had two spells on loan with us one of those players I wish we could have signed permanently.
Rory Prendergast - Made a brief appearance in a pre-season friendly at Shildon in 2013!

I don't know why but I have absolutely no recollection of Barry Conlon's second spell with us.

This is correct. Both were on loan at the start of the Todd/Staunton season. Cook joined a bit later I think.lo36789 wrote:Wasn't he?HarrytheQuaker wrote: ↑Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:09 amDowson was on loan that must of passed me by!!!

Gary Himsworth and Dave Hawker made relatively successful returns; Lee Ellison briefly returned.
