I know York made a couple of eye-catching signings which would appear to make them out to be very strong contenders (yet again). Aside from that and the flurry of incomings at Blyth early doors, I'm well and truly out of the loop as to what else has been happening in the National North. Can anyone shed any light?

There used to be a couple of division-wide message boards floating around which were useful to keep broadly aware of goings-on but I can't seem to find any these days.

Although we made a few good striker signings, I think Boston are looking the strongest, they've added to an already strong squad with the signing of Andy butler from Donny, joe leesley from Harrogate and Shane Byrne from brackley. Excellent signings

I get the feeling this season will be incredibly competitive. We’ve got a backlog after no promotion this year.

Would expect Gloucester and Fylde to be strong, and as YorkFan points out, other sides like Boston have strengthened.

Chorley could be another. They turned things around after bottoming out following relegation. And they have last year’s FA Cup money behind them too.

And sides like Blyth won’t be the pushovers they were.

Won’t be an easy season given the squad overhaul we’re going through.

Think Boston have signed Danny Elliott from Hartlepool as well.

Flinging money at it again, they’ve never learned have they.

If they don’t go up, they are f**ked

Even Alfreton have made a couple of good striker signings. James Hanson & Dayle Southwell.

I tried to persuade Dayle Southwell to sign for us when I bumped into him the other week…he’s mates with Will Hatfield from their Guiseley days. He was still at King’s Lynn and looking to get out (dodgy chairman chat ensued) but he said Darlo would be too far to travel from down here in Lincs

Sorry yes. It’s Hanson to Farsley and Matt Rhead at Alfreton

York up and running with a1-0 win against a strong Newcastle team. Of course preseason results need to be taken with a pinch of salt but certainly a confidence booster. We need to get up and running as soon as possible.

Warched some of that on youtube, whats alarming was there was quite a few first team regulars in the newcastle squad

Off topic somewhat, but noticed James Caton scored for Dover on Saturday. Surely he's not got himself an NL gig?

Think that’s more a reflection on Dover’s position to be honest. They’ve gone part-time this season

By the looks of thing Caton has had a spell at Nuneaton since leaving us, and not a great deal else.

I may be misremembering, but didn't he play for Dover before he joined us?

According to Wikipedia he was at Dover before Darlington but made 0 appearances Mind you, Wikipedia has him only paying approximately 80 or so games in 9 years at all his clubs

Interesting that the Dover write up lists his clubs but omits Darlo (where he made most appearances).

Maybe like most of us he would prefer to forget his spell with Darlo?

Probably just shows how skint and desperate Dover are.

At this rate we could probably do with a player like him just to make up the numbers in our squad, is no one else a bit concerned with a lack of player activity?
"The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It is a very mean and nasty place and it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't how hard you hit; it's about how hard you can get hit, and keep moving forward. How much you can take, and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Yes I had expected 3 or 4 more signings by now but probably the lack of friendlies and the chance to look at players in action must be hampering AA a good deal. Ideally I am sure he would like to have done all his business by now and have his squad in place. We will just have to be patient and not rush in to signing players we might later regret having signed.
To be honest I am not overly optimistic about our prospects for the season ahead as I think it is going to be a very strong league this year. Still time for things to change.

Was hoping to be challenging for a top 10 finish this season, no real indicators to me yet that we won't. Still a month to go and would expect signing in the next fortnight.

Just checked some recent scores and most FL teams are playing with c. 50% trialists still.

In AA we trust!

I’m sure he will have a fair few irons in the fire, top 10 and a tilt at the playoffs , along with another good cup run and I’ll be pleased

It’ll be interesting to see if we go for another player / academy manager or just an out and out academy manager
