Spennymoor Town Preview

by Wayne Raper - 2nd August 2010

spennymoor town preview

With a massively successful season last term, culminating in Spennymoor taking the Northern League title, tonights game against a well drilled team on a high won't be an easy one.

The Quakers will be fielding a full strength line-up against The Moors tonight, kick-off at The Brewery Field is 7.30pm.

Both Paul Terry and Kevin Austin should be involved, and although neither have yet rubber stamped their moves to the club, it's thought to be only a matter of time before their arrivals are made official.

One player who won't be involved tonight is former Spennymoor Town midfielder Gareth Waite. Waite who was signed up by Steve Staunton last season is still recovering from knee surgery performed towards the back end of the season.

As far as Spennymoor are concerned they will be fielding a few familiar faces, here's a quick run down on some of the Moors to watch out for this evening.

Lewis Dodds - scouted by Darlington on a number of occasions, and rumoured to have been offered a deal in the past which he's turned down as he can earn more playing part-time and working full-time. The ex-Sunderland youth is now attracting more league attention including that of Leeds United who have invited him for a week long trial.

Chris Mason
- former Darlington graduate who came through the youth ranks in 2003 along with Chris Hughes. Mason who as a youngster played left-back struggled to break into the first team and played just a few minutes as substitute. Now more at home in the centre of defence, he'll be looking to keep the shackles on Tommy Wright this evening.

Anthony Peacock - the diminutive midfielder was brought to the club by under the recommendation of Mark Proctor and turned in some impressive displays, however his lack of physical presence hampered his pro career, especially as part of a two man midfield. Joining Spennymoor on his release from Darlington, Peacock has gone on to show many first class displays that have led to him being touted for a return to the professional game.

James Cronesberry - highly rated left sided player recently released by Middlesbrough, sees himself as a central player, but normally played on the left wing. Surprising, given our lack of wingers that he didn't pitch up at the Arena for a trial during pre-season. You shouldn't be able to miss the flame haired Cronesberry on the Brewery Field tonight!

Spennymoor (probable): Turns; Griffiths, Ryan, Mason, Capper; Emms, Dodds, Peacock, English; Richardson, Rae
Subs: Bishop, Laws, Smith, Beasley, Hubbard, Ruddy, Cronesberry, Cogdon, Lawther

Darlington (probable): Russell; Arnison, Hone, Miller, Werling; Terry, Chandler, G.Smith, Senior; Wright, M.Smith
Subs: Jack, Austin, McReady, Gray, Main, Moore, Burn, Hopson

Where's Dan and his Twitter updates :P

The Tees Mouth - 2nd August 2010 18:57:47

Couldn't make it tonight. That team shows what he thinks of Gray and Moore to me.

0-0 at half time. Spennymoor the better team in the first half playing down the slope with some pretty decent football.Dodds sitting in front of the back 4 and pulling the strings and the wingers cronesberry and the other who I'm not sure on testing the defence with some direct running and crossing.

Arnison has been well tested but holding up so far plus getting forward well to support smith who looks awkwardly out of position on the right.

Russell has had to be on guard to pull off 4 good saves so far while Turns in the Spenny goal has been mostly a spectator

Very little invention from darlo with the long ball to wright the only real outlet but he's failed to find senior with any knock downs.Senior has been so starved of service he's dropped in the hole to make a 4-4-2. With little natural width and players that won't take people on were a bit one dimensional.Hoping we chuck another striker on second half if were gonna continue to go direct.

Terry has been pretty quiet in midfield altho come into it a little more towards the end of the half

Looks like mcready, smith, j.gray on for 2nd half for chandler, werling, wright

Darlo Fonz - 2nd August 2010 19:33:29

Did it kick off 7:45 then?

divas - 2nd August 2010 19:37:19

7.30

divas - 2nd August 2010 19:46:39

Jack on for Russell, Moore for Senior

divas - 2nd August 2010 19:58:43

Main on for g.smith

Darlo looking a little better second half with Moore threatening on a couple of occasions.Michael Smith holding the ball up well allowing the midfield to push up

divas - 2nd August 2010 20:02:40

Phil gray on for Austin who's looked very solid

divas - 2nd August 2010 20:05:46

Closest we've come to a goal. Main flicks a lovely ball on from a Gray throw into the path of Josh Gray who beats his man and puts a low ball in for main sliding in,keeper gets a hand to it but mcready can't bundle the ball over the line

divas - 2nd August 2010 20:26:21

Full time 0-0

Meh, it's a friendly.

DarloOnTheUp - 2nd August 2010 20:40:54

Againsy Spennymoor? Jesus Christ.

Admittedly I've only seen 1 preseason friendly (Sheff Wed) but I am not impressed so far with what i've seen & read, despite the overwhelming positiveness of other posters.

The team doesn't seem to be playing with any fluency or confidence. (Spare me the "its early days", "friendlies don't matter", etc, etc comments).

At the end of last season I was happy to say we'd be very comfortable challenging for a top 5 finish. I am now lowering my expectations to a top 10 finish, which would be a massive failure by the manager given resources at his disposal.

While I've got even less to go on than you, we've sounded very solid defensively in most games and are maybe lacking some fluency in attack.

I'm happy to start the season being hard to beat and then building from there - especially once the HITMAN gets himself fit again.

Sunderland probably thought only 1-0 against darlo, Jesus Christ! Last season Newcastle probably thought a 6-1 thrashing by Leyton Orient, Jesus Christ! I wouldn't look too much into pre season results! :)
