Colin Todd Resigns

colin todd resigns

Colin Todd has resigned from his post as manager of Darlington Football Club after just four months in charge.  After collecting just 1 point from the season before todays game it was agreed that he would leave his post if The Quakers did not gain a victory.

Darlington Chairman Raj Singh tonight said of the departure "Colin is keen to do what's right for the club and accepts the time is right for him to step aside."

Talking to BBC Tees after the draw away at Grimsby he said

"It was agreed before today's game that if we didn't get the win then I'd be leaving.

"At certain levels you're dictated by results, the time factor sometimes isn't long enough but you have to take the rough with the smooth."

He added: "I think the chairman should have been here to address the situation. I've had the players all in together and nobody had any idea, not even my staff [that I was going]."

When asked who had suggested he should leave if Darlington failed to win, Todd added: "It was the chairman. It was [a feeling of] disappointment. It was always going to be a difficult job here and a long job."

"I know for a fact it will be somebody new. [Dean] Windass will not get the job so they're looking for someone, I don't know what type of manager,"

In his statement Chairman Raj Singh said "It’s with great regret that we’re having to part company in these circumstances, albeit amicably. We were delighted with the work Colin did during the summer in assembling a playing squad from virtually scratch, guiding the club through an extremely turbulent time, and we’re forever grateful to him for that."

"He’s a good guy and I always found him very easy to work with, and I’d like to thank him for everything he did for us. But we have to do something to turn things around and Colin is well experienced to realise that the situation we’re in would always ask questions. It’s regrettable that it has come to this, but Colin is keen to do what’s right for the club and accepts the time is right for him to step aside."

"We haven’t had time to draw up a wish-list of candidates yet, but we do expect to receive a high calibre of applicants," he said. "This is a great club for any manager. We’re well aware of the position we’re in right now, but I’d hope our next manager sees it as a challenge and buys in to what I’m trying to achieve at Darlington."

Just on BBC Tees

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:31:23

Just to clarify that this is NOT a joke. Was mentioned just 5 mins ago on Tees, further reaction on us after 6pm. I suppose at least it saves us any compensation pay off.

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 16:32:44

Seriously?? I had bbc tees on the radio for the game, but it doing my head as all they ever talk about is boro, like people say on the forum it should be named bbc boro

Quakerz - 26th September 2009 16:33:08

Respect to him, he could have held on for a pay off.

Its not worked and he has held his hands up.

Also, get in!

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 16:33:30

Just heard ali brownlee say it

quakerray - 26th September 2009 16:34:18

so who do we want in?
i'll be guessing liddle and maddison for now to save money

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:35:09

Yeah I decided to carry on listening as i cba to turn off the radio and turn it back on after 6! I too respect him for resigning, whether or not you were joking Quakerz im not sure ;) , but respect to him with our situation etc and not wanting to take more money off his.

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 16:35:53

Did he jump or was he pushed ???

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:36:16

Hopefully he'll do his interview after 6pm

Quakerz - 26th September 2009 16:36:36

No seriously, respect to him. He probably appreciates the club couldn't pay him off and did them a favour.

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:38:03

I presume this also means Windass has gone. Not sure if anyone else heard the interview he did at half time? Poor commitment from him tbh, said he'd rather be playing for Hull than be our assistant manager which maybe lots of people would, but it's not something he should be saying.

KCChiefs - 26th September 2009 16:38:26

Wonder if we now go for Gary Speed....

Vodka_Vic - 26th September 2009 16:38:45

Thanks colin for stepping in during troubled times and putting a team together, albeit a poor one, meaning we could at least take our place in League 2.
I wasn't your biggest fan, but respect you for what you did under troubled times.

BishopQuaker - 26th September 2009 16:39:47

Respect to him for resigning rather than being sacked.

Hopefully thus leaves us with enough time to save the season i.e. stay up.

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:40:04

Apparently they're going to Blundell Park soon on BBC Tees, presumably for an interview

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:41:06

Decision made on Thursday that he would leave and only take charge today

Didn't hear that interview, but if he said that it is a disgrace,

Vodka_Vic - 26th September 2009 16:42:19

It had been agreed midweek (Thursday).
The rumours that he'd lost the dressing room were utterly untrue.
Players were shocked.
Windass also expected to go.

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 16:42:32

Just heard it that windass might still be there at the club, ray simpson said colin said in the interview that windass wont get the job

BishopQuaker - 26th September 2009 16:43:11

Well thats reassuring.

I wonder if the team knew that he would only be in temporary command today

reddy - 26th September 2009 16:43:51

has windass40 gone to?

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:44:16

I dont think the players knew, sounded like he told them afterwards and they were shocked. Full interview after the hour I think.

Darlo_H - 26th September 2009 16:45:21

It's been coming, I don't think any of us (besides darlo2001) could really deny that.

I share the respect to him for saving us a payoff, maybe this is his strange way of going out on a high, who knows, time to get the kick up the arse this club so desperately needs.

DIRTYDAVE - 26th September 2009 16:45:55

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/footbal ... 276584.stm THE DEATH OF THE GREEN POLO ! BYE BYE

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:47:00

Presumably, if it was decided on Thursday, Raj has someone lined up. Who was it who said to expect someone special?? Are you in the know whoever you are!?

Maybe it's his way of salvaging some pride, by doing the honourable thing.
I certainly respect his decision.

al_quaker - 26th September 2009 16:51:23

I respect his decision. He's been good enough to get us a team together from nothing so we could play in L2 this season. It's half decent on paper too. Something isn't working, be it tactics, selections or whatever. I don't claim to be an expert so I'm not going to try and guess what needs to be done to put it right, but Todd must realise it isn't working, so I respect him for that. Now, time to kick start our season!

Quakerz - 26th September 2009 16:51:35

Hmm, so it was agreed the other day that he would resign? Maybe he did agree a severance package to "resign" then.

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 16:54:15

Mutual Consent apparently, so there could well be some sort of package, who knows. Definitely won't be the full amount a sacking would have required though.

Some interesting comments from Windass at half time though, was pre recorded for BBC Humberside before the match and played on Tees at ht, he said he was more likely to be ball boy for Hull City next week if we didn't get a result today.

number_one - 26th September 2009 16:54:48

Gutted, I won't be going back!!

Hodgy in..he'll get us back to Feethams and the promised land

carver30 - 26th September 2009 17:00:13

Raj is quite astute I'd imagine he has someone lined up and it will be a name to get excited about. Hopefully we will have a few more there on Tuesday night.

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 17:01:58

Windass has gone aswell

Child_in_Time - 26th September 2009 17:02:18

Windass has gone too

Shearer?

tdk1 - 26th September 2009 17:03:32

Great news, and fair play if he did walk without a payout. I've been a Todd-outer since about week four, but you have to say fair enough to the man for going now - he'll not see another league management job. Good job Windass has gone as well - he was absolutely pitiful on the pitch, and didn't look like much on it.

Now the big question, who next?

Shearer?
:D He did say he would look at jobs other than Newcastle! Would get a fair few Geordies in and probably triple the crowd!

Quakerz - 26th September 2009 17:05:40

Windass, now there was a disappointment. You kind of hoped he'd still have some of the old magic and bang a few in.

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 17:05:57

Todd has said he was going "if we didnt get the win".

Just had a quick snipe at Raj for not being there today and also that Raj made the suggestion

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 17:06:07

NO one knew about it, Raj said to him no win no job basically

Jamm - 26th September 2009 17:06:51

Todd sounds like Reynolds with the amount of times he says "ya know"!

Vodka_Vic - 26th September 2009 17:07:59

'If I'd stayed, we would have turned it round'!

carver30 - 26th September 2009 17:09:48

If Raj had been there today he would have been accused of gloating he cant win. Todd was not Raj's choice but Houghton's. At least the next appointment will be Raj's.

tdk1 - 26th September 2009 17:10:33

Did he just say that? If so...

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Don't think so Colin.

knoxy5000 - 26th September 2009 17:13:31

The way he talked about it he was implying that the players wont work a new manager as they are so gutted hes gone.

Shieldsy - 26th September 2009 17:14:43

Noone lined up according to Fordy, they want interested parties to contact them :?
Think he said probably by next Saturday, didn't quite hear though.

Quakerz - 26th September 2009 17:17:26

knoxy5000 wrote:The way he talked about it he was implying that the players wont work a new manager as they are so gutted hes gone.
You would be gutted if it was the end of easy training sessions.

What was it that the Accrington scout said pre season? That he couldn't believe how poor we were and that Accrington were twice as "sharp". I started worrying then. If you can't even get basic fitness right, you don't stand an earthly.

cameron-darlo - 26th September 2009 17:21:15

i dont know why, but i'm suddenly looking forward to the rochdale game.. i hope we bounce back on tuesday like lincoln did against us

Earl_Lee_Dawes - 26th September 2009 17:37:30

Yes, I think there might be more at the game on Tuesday than expected.

Darlo Diamond - 26th September 2009 21:30:45

What about bringing Martin Gray back, It appeared he got on well with Raj and he was a great servant to the club. If Raj was incharge when he was about to leave he may have stayed?
